This is the fourth article that has popped up today about an urgent update for Windows computers - this includes Windows 7. The threat is called PrintNightmare and has to do with the print spooler service.

And I got even another notice about this tonight in another tech newsfeed.

Both machines updated. Virus databases updated and scans run. Everything seems to be OK, but when Microsoft Jumps to it, its best to follow their advice. I wonder if this is related to the recent ransomware attacks?

How do you do the update? Will it be in the monthly update?

I wondered the same, Albert. oldbroad, I would just run the updater. In Windows 10, it's Settings, Update and Security. I don't remember how to do it on Windows 7.

We disabled the Windows Print Spooler service last night. I did check available updates to see if there was one and a different update downloaded automatically, so I guess there isn't one. I did come across an article on Bleeping Computer that said the Microsoft update left the computer still vulnerable and they had another fix. I'm not sure where I stand now.

The article I linked to said the update to look for is KB5004945 in the newer versions of Windows 10. Mine is in a Cumulative update installed on 7/7.

I haven't seen anything about another fix yet, but I'll post here if I do.

Mine too but I updated to Version 21H1 anyway, though it says it was installed on 7/08.

I've noticed recently (most likely since this news broke) that if I try to print certain things (actually copying and pasting a recipe to a word doc) I get the following message:

Microsoft Word Security Notice
Microsoft Office has identified a potential security concern.
This document contains fields that can share data with external files
and websites. It is important that this file is from a trustworthy
source.
Choosing yes will enable updating all fields in this file, until you
close it
Yes No

So, my question is this. I think it defaults to yes if you just close the box. Is yes the better answer? What is it updating and is that what I would want to happen?

What version of Word are you using?

This might help explain... could have come from a recent update. You did the recent feature update, didn't you? I haven't done it yet.

How do I know that? It is Office 2019.

Just saw your edit but haven't looked at the link yet. Don't know what update you mean.

That article is from May 2019. This message just started appearing in the last week or so which is why I posted it in this thread believing it had to do with this topic. I don't see that update in my system.

What is your opinion on answering it "yes" or "no".

You said you did the 21H1 feature update the other day. I know it's from 2019... but it relates to an update causing it. I can't find anything more recent. I also have Office 2019. I think I'll do the update tonight and see if I get the same thing.

I'll have to take your word for it because I haven't got a clue but that feature update hasn't been sitting there waiting to be updated for that long.

Mine hasn't been there that long either. This is what you said earlier and what I was going on.

You know, when I wrote that it was installed on 7/08, I was for some reason thinking that was a couple of months ago. I just realized today when I started writing it again that it was just the other day. crazy
