Oldbroad, make sure you have a nice long rest with some pampering between boarders. You need to recharge.

It's still very hot here, and muggy, which is odd for us. Now is the time we'd be out in the boat every day, so my husband is feeling a bit down. Still, he's able to get up and down the stairs, and once I pick up the folding wheelchair this afternoon we'll be able to at least go out for a coffee and a drive. He's making slow progress, but apparently he still has enough muscle to completely recover -- it'll just take longer because of the cancer.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Well, I spent the evening at the emergency vets with my little boarder. She's really not feeling well at all, could use some positive vibes. She's only 7 pounds.

Tomorrow will be a better day, I'm sure of it.

Hoping to hear how your little boarder is doing today, Ana. Good morning, everyone! I am grabbing a cup of coffee and heading out. Today is salsa canning day. A friend who is curious about our process is coming out to help. Will be sending at least 12 pints of salsa home with him!

Laundry... a big load of my old worn bath towels that we use to clean up after canning tomatoes. Then I'm headed back out to the tomato forests! Have to do the 10:00 closing at the horse rescue tonight. I'm hoping I only have three skinny Arabians to feed. Last time I closed it was 16 horses to feed at night!

Soot, we generally have around 100 horses and a couple hundred other rescued farm animal down there. It's the emaciated ones that come in that we have to feed at night. I have fed 42 horses at 10:00 at night because we had so many rescues in a row!

We are one of the top 3 large animal rescues in the US. We're a division of the Humane Society of Missouri. We take horses and other abused/neglected farm animals from all over the state of Missouri. But since there are so few facilities like ours to handle large numbers of horses, we get them for other states too. All - except for a select few - are put up for adoption as soon as they are healthy. Which can take many, many months depending on how bad they are when they come in. We don't save all of them, but we save nearly all. To say the least, I've seen some terrible things down there. Sometimes I really don't like most humans at all.

Thanks. Yes, so many people doing bad things to poor animals. I sometimes wonder what thoughts are in the minds of neglected and abused animals, especially pets who you are supposed to love and care for.

I can never understand how someone can abuse an animal. It breaks my heart to think of it. It's wonderful that there are people like you out there taking care of them, Draclvr.

We hit a big milestone today with my husband's walking. He's been up and down the stairs a couple of times, but today we got him down the stairs, through the garage and out to my car (using his walker) , and he is able to get in and out of my Accord, which means we can now go for short drives and grab a coffee at our favourite coffee shop. Also, it means we no longer have to rely on the Medi Van for transport to and from the hospital and other medical appointments. He's also able to take a few unassisted steps on his own, which means his balance is back.

I'd really love it if he were able to get out in his boat at least a few times later this summer. The Humpbacks don't leave until late October, so there's still time.

And as a lovely treat, A few minutes ago I glanced out the window and saw an enormous splash halfway across the channel. It was a lone humpback breaching and tail-slapping, and it went on for a full ten minutes, so John was able to get to the window in time to watch it for a while.

We've noticed a couple of things about the breaching. It only happens later in the summer after the humpbacks have been feeding for a couple of months, and it happens a lot in the evening. It's probably a means of long-distance communication (it's pretty loud) , but I'm sure they also do it just because it's fun.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.
