Hello all, it's been a while. I just received an advertisement from GOG saying they now have a game titled "MYST: newly imagined" or something like that. As a confirmed "MYST-aholic" I am interested in any new approach to MYST. Does anyone know anything about this new release of a game that is about thirty years old?

I've heard it might be a VR release, but I'm not sure.

The GOG write-up says this:

Quote
Q: Do I need a VR headset to play Myst?
A: You do not need a VR headset to play Myst. Myst is playable with or without a VR headset.

Quote
BUILT FOR BOTH VR AND 2D DISPLAYS

Designed and built from the ground up in Unreal Engine, this newly-reimagined version of Myst includes fresh takes on the visuals in every area in the game. With both VR and 2D play experiences in mind, this definitive, modern edition of Myst will immerse you in the world in a way that has never been possible before.

The VR experience includes both Free Roam and Teleport modes, and supports Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Rift S, and Quest via Oculus Link.

Additionally, Myst includes many “comfort level” features for both new and experienced VR users, including the option to enable smooth or snap turning, quick travel up stairs and ladders, vertical height quantization, and more!

NEW AND REQUESTED FEATURES

For the first time in Myst’s history, enjoy the game in many different languages through localized UI, including dialogue and gameplay-context subtitles.
- A variety of accessibility options to assist in gameplay.
- Tired of taking notes? Now you can take photo captures in-game to keep track of what you’ve encountered!
- A large number of graphics options to choose from, such as supersampling options and Ray Tracing to bring the best Myst experience out of the hardware you have.

Quote
Built from the ground up to play both in VR as well as traditional flatscreen displays, Myst is teeming with new art, new sound, re-imagined interactions, and even optional puzzle randomization. Finally... the highly anticipated Myst 2D/VR experience has arrived!

I wish they would make some new games and quit re-doing Myst! But it would have to be one that wouldn't make me nauseous. smile

It's good to know that GOG has it, but it will not be for me for awhile, be warned that the Minimum Video Card requirement is a VC that has 4G memory. So another game to place on the "Future purchase shelf" probably another 4 to 5 years for me.

I always love the Myst series. But I enjoyed the puzzles so I guess I wouldn't re-buy a puzzle game that I already know all the answers?

I read the reviews and read more info, but 30 bucks seems a heavy hit for a redone, thirty-year-old, game. I’ll have to contemplate a bit more.

One thing worth mentioning is that I read one player saying that this game is not point and click and that some people are hoping for a patch that provides more mouse support.

It isn't necessary to use the VR mode of the game as it also plays, beautifully, on a regular computer. As for the Post in the above Linked Thread, all you need is a programmable mouse to program the 'W' key with one of the buttons and you steer with the mouse and press your programed mouse button to move in that direction. This has been used in many games released in the last several years. Just as good, if not better, than the old node based Point and Click imo. I am having fun visiting the old Island again after so many years and they did a wonderful job redoing the graphics in high def.

You are probably way too busy with your crops at this time of year Miss Drac to be playing games snicker

I might also add that this new version has a camera (space bar) where you can easily take photos within the game which helps if you don't like to take notes or draw. I can't remember for sure but I don't think any of the other versions of Myst had this option...or am I mistaken?

They are indeed making a new game, named Firmament. It was supposed to release in 2020, but delayed till 2022. It will be a Myst-like game, but not set in the Myst universe. It will be for VR and standard displays.

Yeah, I forgot about this one GamingPhreak, though I must say the teaser trailer didn't do anything for me anyway.

In the Options for the 'new' Myst game can you swap WSAD for the Arrow keys. I do this for games as I am a leftie. Sometimes for games eg SOMA and Deliver Us The Moon I use a mix of mouse, arrow keys and basic Logitech controller.

I don't have the answer to your question, but hopefully another player will know.

This is not first hand knowledge but I read in a walkthrough from a reliable source that you use the WASD keys to move around, and the mouse for turning and interacting.

I found some info about the controls for Myst 2021 at this website. Looks like there's an option to use the arrow keys.

Oh, I didn't read your post right. I was thinking you wanted to use the WASD keys instead of the arrow keys. Glad you found some info!
