I have realized that it's time to get a new computer, as some of the games I want to get will not run on my win 7 64. Italked to my it guy and he emailed me 4 suggestions. Which one do you think would be best? I dont do rpg etc, just regular point and click adventures,--witha little bit of keyboard if I have to.

The second one is ideal for your use as the CPU is a newer model than the first one.

thanks in advance,

PS I am totally computer illiterate, so spare me any technical jargon LOL!

pps. the one he reccommended did not get great reviews

First, NO computer running Windows 7 should be on the internet. There have been no security updates for a couple of years and it has become a prime target for hackers. So, the sooner you can stop using it the better!

First question is: What is your budget? While you're at it, you should try to get the best components you can.

Second question is: What kind of gaming do you do? Strictly adventure, dark side? If you don't do any high end dark side gaming those $1800 - $2000+ computers are overkill for you.

All too true about Win 7 , no internet access at all . Could still use it to game on though , at least for the immediate future , possibly . Intel has been more lenient about Win 7 with newer hardware/chipset support , but even that isn't much . AMD stopped Win 7 chipset support with , I believe , second gen Ryzen cpus . Win 7 still gets security updates , as an enterprise license , but even that is stopping after year's end . If I read the first couple lines of Dorish' opener , plays adventures nearly exclusive . I would add this . Get something custom built . There are several places , such as Cyberpower pc , or Ibuypower . I say custom built , because you are in control of what is put on the hdd/ssd . Pre built pc's , such as a pc from Dell or HP , are loaded with software that has no practical function . HP is rather notorious for putting a lot of HP "bloatware" (HP programs & settings that have zero importance , & do little to the overall function of the pc , except to slow it down) . Historically , an AMD pc has been cheaper to build than an Intel based pc , but what cpu is utilized , is personal preference . If adventures is the main avenue of gaming , then some funds can be saved , as nearly all adventures are not very taxing on a graphics card . A $1300 cost is possibly overkill for an adventure gamer , but with the high cost of graphics cards in the last couple years , perhaps not .

Thanks, CD! All good points. However, dorish lives in Canada so my normal recommendation for a custom build by eCollegepc won't work. Let's see what responses we get.

Thank you both for your replies. My problem is that I know absolutely NOTHING about the internal workings of a computer---same as a car LOL! so I neeed one that is already built. I don't play any darkside games or arcade, or action. I want to play the new Syberia game--I bought it from GOG, but had to request a refund, as it wouln't run on my computer.---same with the new Riddle of the sphinx game. I am willing to spend up to about $2000 to $3000 for a new computer that's going to last a long time and run smoothly. I was leaning toward s either number 1 or number 4 on that list, but having no clue I came here as you are all gamers and know WAY more thn I do about computers. I hope you can give me some guidance, or at least tell me what to get put into one that I can tell my IT guy to get for me. I just want a very good computer.

Thank you, dorish. That's all I needed to know! I know you don't need any of the other information! Anyway, I'm leaning towards the ASUS for $1399. I wish it had a bit better video card though. Let me look at some of the HP's and I'll get back to you here.

EDIT: OK. Here is the one I would recommend from your list since you can go as high as you indicated. I like the 512 GB solid state drive... and that video card is better than mine! You will be able to play anything you throw at this computer for a long time!

Since you live in Canada there is a chain of excellent Computer stores in Canada and there might be one close to you, it is called Canada Computers:

https://www.canadacomputers.com/

It must be good because one my nephews buys all his computers and or laptops there and he also buys them there for family and friends who asks' him for advice.

Good luck with your purchase.

Thank you starcom, i wll look into that.

Draclvr, here are a few of the negative comments about the HP Omen 25L PC. They have me a bit worried.

Doreen

This pc is junk. Overheating. Case is a [blip]. No rgb heater and too less options of fan connectors. Second slot for nvme is behind the gpu, so kind of unusable because of the overheating problem. HP property pieces. The gpu 3060 has only one fan. On benchmark test don't always find the ssd so can't finish the test when it happens. Scores under expectations. Component seem great at first look but stay away and buy a real gaming pc. I buy it because there's not a lot of choice of pc with the lack of stock everywhere. If I have known all this, I would have wait and buy something else for sure.

My wife got this computer so we could game together. She likes it a lot, me on the other hand... not too impressed. Reasoning is below. Pros: -nice LED lighting -fast for what it is -easy to get to everything -decent cable management right out of the gate Cons: -terrible air flow. CPU and GPU get hot on high settings. - nowhere to mount extra fans unless you either use double sided tape or just set the fan in the bottom of the case. -motherboard isn't anything special. No extra USB headers.

I can’t even think of where to begin… Let’s start with the positives, the graphics card and the cpu are very good (not made by HP). Everything else however is terrible. Let’s say for example your little brother needed a new computer but he doesn’t need top notch things, so you buy him this computer and as the years go on you need a new cpu for it because he’s dumb and fried it. Lucky for you, you have a Ryzen 2600x that’s still pretty pricey and he wants to use it. You can’t, because this motherboard only takes the three most expensive CPU’s. Let’s say the motherboard gives out for some reason or some static shock screws it up, and now you need to change it out for a nice new gaming motherboard. You can’t, because the power sw cable that needs to connect to the motherboard to turn it on is purposely made extremely short because HP made the motherboard and the case that goes in this and they put the power sw connector on the motherboard in the top right corner closer to the cable rather than in the bottom right corner (where every other GOOD company puts their power sw connector). Let’s say you wanted to keep the computer exactly how it is but it is constantly overheating because the case is complete garbage and doesn’t actually get any heat out, so you want to add 3 more fans to help bring more cooler air in and take more warm air out. You guessed it, you can’t. Not only would you have to spend more money so you can plug in an a extension for all the fans to be able to get power, you would also need to remove 2 panels that cover wires so you can make shift a spot for fans to go with zip ties. The actual way the case is set up BLOCKS the vents so air literally can’t get out…. You only get one ram stick which we all know is dumb for a gaming computer, not a huge issue but seriously, give me two 16 gb instead of one 32 gb. The SSD (which is garbage) - they don’t even bother putting a case on it, motherboard, and case are all made by HP, which I cannot emphasize enough, is very very bad. If you are looking for a build that you will eventually, no matter what, will have big problems with down the line, buy it, but I would highly recommend buying the exact same cpu and video card, bringing it to an ACTUAL computer store and asking them to build you a gaming pc and spending a few more hundred dollars. You will be able to switch out anything that stops working at any time with another GOOD product if you buy a build that isn’t made by HP. Take my advice from someone who went through all that nonsense first hand. Don’t buy it.

Pretty much all of these comments are petty. One RAM stick instead of two, motherboard nothing special, can't mount extra fans, motherboard power cable too short, SSD not high end... Ummm... guys... this is what you get when you buy a branded computer! Most of the complaints are from someone who really needs to just go build his own computer. Of course you can't mount extra fans! And on and on.

Every one of these complaints is from people who opened up the case and wanted to tweak things inside. The first one is from someone who is running benchmarks.

What I would suggest is that you talk to your IT guy and see what he thinks of these complaints. Normally when someone buys a branded PC, they don't open it up and try to rebuild it.

I did go look at the computers at the place that Starcom linked you too. I'm not sure if you need to get these from a physical store or if you can just order them to be shipped. They are also all branded computers. I was hoping for an option to build your own, but I didn't see it.

EDIT: I found a PCBuilders.com in Canada. I could put together a similar computer with components that would be used by someone who builds their own. They best I could come up with was about $2,600. One of the reasons gaming computers are so expensive right now is the cost of the video cards. You weren't even able to BUY a video card for over a year because of the chip shortages among other things. If you COULD find one, you had to sell a kidney to be able to afford it! I just installed my nice, but nothing fancy video card last week. I had purchased it over a year ago for $373. I looked it up and today it's $1,537!!

Thank you Drclvr. The one you recommended is the same one my IT guy did, so I guess I will go with that one. When you don't know anything about a certain subject, you tend to worry --maybe too much. I will keep you posted, and thank you and everyone else who replied to my post.

I don't think you will be disappointed. Talk about the complaints with your IT guy if it will help ease your mind.

What do you think of this one as compared to the other? It's on sale for the same price.

It looks fine - just has an AMD processor instead of Intel. Otherwise, it's the same computer. Could you please post a link? I'm having a hard finding this exact one. Is this it?

Just to stick my non-tech nose in, if it's the one Drac linked to shows it has Windows 10. Something else to think about.

I read recently that Windows 12 expected release date is fall 2025. If this is true, well...

Hopefully Windows 12 will be released later than that. There are definitely rumblings that it is already in the works, though. Let's just say that I certainly will not be rushing to upgrade Windows 10 - that is for sure.

Windows 12

Thanks for the link Marian. I guess a Win 12 release before the end of support for Win 10 and before I spring for Win 11 would be best (for me anyway).

I have plenty to say too, but this is not the topic for it. Windows 10 is what comes on almost all new computers right now, oldbroad. Don't get me started!!! mad

Windows 10 or Windows 11? In the product details of the one you linked to it says Windows 10, which is why I brought the subject up. I just think that if dorish is getting a new computer she might as well get Windows 11 now so she doesn't have to worry about it in a few more years. I certainly didn't mean to go off subject.

I know you didn't, oldbroad! You had a valid point and I agree with you, but as I said, there are very few new Windows 11 computers being sold right now. A backlog? I don't know. I have a rant to go off on, but was saying this isn't the forum for my rant!

LOL! my mind is beginning to become boggled ! I guess I should start looking for computers with windows 11 now. yes Draclvr I think that is the same one. I saw it listed on canadacomputers.com---the one that Starforce mentioned. I also would like 1 TB ssd. --back to the drawing board.

dorish, you're not going to find much out there with Windows 11 on it. BUT!! Here is a question you can ask the seller... Can you upgrade this computer to Windows 11? Right now the upgrade is free. Again, talk to your IT guy. He may have some insights for you.

I found a few more from canadacomputers.com. they have ! TB SSD, but are all windowa 10. Mind you, since I am still using win 7, that should be a HUGE difference. There is one of their stores, in the town where I live, about 10 minutes away.
