That is good to know, Marian! Hopefully, it still can be found and downloaded safely.

I just want to mention a couple things I ran into or want to mention. On the disc, or at least the DVD version I have, the folder that has the direct x set up in it. The folder before that should have a DXTEST, you can open and tell it to install DirectX. Not sure if that makes a difference in getting it to run. Secondly, I seem to have lost my mouse cursor when I booted up the game. Not sure what processes were running in the background, but a reboot of my computer fixed the problem and I was able to go back in game.

Thought I would just jump in here and revive this thread. Amber is working directly in Windows 10. There are a few bugs. I read another forum that the game can crash when your in the underwater level. I guess there's also a passcode you have to enter during the game and you can't get past it but someone made a save file that gets you past that particular part of the game. But yes, I downloaded an installer that basically installs over your Amber Directory. As soon you as do that, the game loads right up in Windows 10.

This is always good information to know, learning more about getting older games running. Thanks for telling us about your experience. It is helpful for other players.

Thanks, flamefury for the post. Yes, Amber can run native in Win 10. Didn't know about the crash or passcode issues (are you talking there about a password for a computer (game puzzle) or some other passcode...?

Question for you if I may. Have you tried playing Dartk Side Of The Moon native under Win 10? I'm still trying to find out if anyone has been able to get the Winterfury "text fix" to display the game text properly under Win 10. The game runs great otherwise... but I haven't had any luck getting the text to display and could still use some help there...

Thanks again...

flamefury, can you tell me what version of riched32.dll you are using...? (hover over file name in the bin folder w/ mouse) I just replied to you in the other DSOM/Win 10 thread you just posted in before seeing your new thread here. The only thing that doesn't work for me running DSOM natively under Win 10 is the Winterfury "text-fix" for the "invisible" text. I'd like to check & see if I'm using the correct/incorrect dll version...

Thanks...

I have merged the two threads in this forum that concern running Dark Side of the Moon in Windows 10, as it seems redundant to have two separate threads on the same topic.

mystrw1, the version of riched32.dll that I am running is 4.0.993.4. It's working fine for me, I am able to see all my dialogue options.

Thank you, Flamefury. Yea, that's the same version. Reading thru your instructions a little closer, I noticed that you referenced the "DSOM executable". Are you able to use the "DSOM.exe" executable in the DVD version of the game? On the CD version (on my version of the CD version, at least...) that file isn't compatible with Win 10 (not 32-bit compatible, I guess) and can't be used to load/start the game in Win 10. I've been "cheating" and using the "Launch32.exe" file in the "DSOM" folder, so I guess I never actually "installed" the game onto my hard drive (I just copied the contents of Disk 1 over...) and, possibly, never installed the correct DirectX version (but the game runs fine, except for the text issue...). I'm wondering now if the "DSOM.exe" file was updated to 32-bit compatible on the DVD?

Cheaters never prosper, it appears...

And reading your discussion about DirectX versions in your instructions, I checked the game's Readme file which discusses DSOM installing DirectX 5 if/as needed during game install. When I check my DXTool as mentioned, I see a note at the top that says "DirectX 1 installed". Is that the same note you see there ... or do you see diff.? Dxsetup won't allow me to make any changes (buttons are grayed out...)

Thanks again for any addit. help...

Sorry, should have been more clear. Yes, change compatibility on launch32.exe. I'll see if I can change my original post to clarify. Yeah the trick is trying to get the game installed on the computer which I was able to do. Did you go to your Disc 1 to check if there is a direct x folder on there? The DVD version included this. So if you find the direct x folder on your disc, see if there's a dxtest. When it opens, try clicking install direct X from there. But yes, try to get it to install on the hard drive instead of copying.

Thanks again. Yes, CD 1 has the "regedit" & "directx" folders. And "dxtest" is there in regedit. OK, so you used dxtest, not dxsetup, to install your DirectX 5. The "Install DirectX" button there is active for me and when I use it, I get messages sayingt DX isinstalling, a wordy pop-up message followed by DX has been installed message. But when reboot then check my DX version w/ dxtool, it still says DX 1 is installed ... and when I run the game, still no visible text. So I don't think DX 5 is installing for me.

If you don't mind (again), please clarify the following:
-What exact process did you perform/repeat to get your DirectX 5 installed? Unclear about that from your instructs.
- Did/Does your "dxtest" DDraw test pass or fail? (My test Fails...)
- Which ver. of DX does your "dxtool" tell you is installed? (Mine shows DirectX 1)
-Separately, how did you install your game files to your HDD, if you (also) cannot use "DSOM.exe" (the install. .exe) due to incompatibility and you didn't just copy them over from the DVD?

Thanks again...

This is very f'ing frustrating...
