In an absolutely horrible coincidence, John's desktop computer died last week.

On his laptop he has Outlook, but when I open it, it won't show me all of his emails, just a couple from today and then the previous ones are from March. I can't work out how to get the emails rom the interim period.

I'm trying to piece together anything outstanding on a book deal he had and I can't find the emails from that period. Is there a way to force it to download them or to access them? Or am I going to have to take the dead machine in and have the hard drive rescued?

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I really can't help with Outlook which I do not like but use sometimes, but as for that "horrible coincidence"? I don't think those things are coincidences. I've had at least 3 similar incidents happen with the deaths of 3 loved ones.

I don't use Outlook, but based on googling this issue, it sounds like it might be something in your View settings that needs changing. Hopefully someone will be along who is very familiar with Outlook who can help you.

First, let's clarify if he used the web-based email called Outlook.com or if he used the email client that comes with Microsoft Office. I use both and there are a couple of possibilities. I want to start with your ISP. Outlook that is a part of Office is what we call an email client - that means the emails are sent through your ISP server. So the missing emails may still be on the ISP server. It could also be a function of the "sort" that is selected. Is it possible he had some Favorites folders on the left he would have moved certain emails into? If he used Outlook.com, that might be a little more complicated.

I also know how to go into your computer directory and retrieve emails, but that means it has to have been Outlook, not Outlook.com.

So, just let me know which one we are dealing with and we'll go from there. His email address will tell which one it is.

I just edited... his email address will tell you which one. What is the ending on it?

It should be @shaw.ca. I thought I could just use my computer to get his mail, but for some reason the password he used for decades doesn't work. Yet I'm sure I accessed it when he was in the hospital. Don't know what's going on now.

The program on his computer is a newer version of MS Outlook.

EDIT: The other thing is, the Outlook that he has on his laptop, which I'm accessing now, will not download any new messages. It's just got literally one month of emails, and that's it. Just March. Nothing older or newer.

OK. So it sounds like it is the Outlook email client and not the web based Outlook. If it was, his email address would end like one of my accounts... draclvr@outlook.com.

This Outlook account has to be through your ISP. You can go into the Accounts and look at the information there.

Go to the inbox and click on File in the upper left corner.

Then click on Account Settings.

Then click on Server Settings.

This should be a POP (post office protocol) for incoming mail and SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) for outgoing mail account.

None of this helps, but it does show you what the server settings are and how your ISP handles email. Your ISP would have provided this POP/SMTP email address for John. I would contact them and tell them your situation and see if they can help you.

Another suggestion is to go to your ISP provider website. A lot of times they will also provide web-based email for your email address which allows you to access email from any computer anywhere.

I just sent an email to his address and nothing came through on his laptop email. There's something very wrong here. And his password, the one he's used for two decades, no longer works.

I don't know what's going on, because Shaw would not have cancelled his account - legally only I can do that.

Oh my god. Now the backup drive for his computer doesn't work. I used it only a couple of days ago and now it doesn't even show up. That means I've lost everything on his computer. Every single thing.

You're going to need to contact them to find out what's going on. Did you try any of the stuff I suggested? Especially going to the Shaw website to see if they have a web-based email to access John's account?

Okay, so I got the old machine working, and no email went there, either.

It's almost like someone closed his account, but that would be illegal. I'll try the other stuff in the morning.

I know what it is.

He ran his personal email through the University. Of course they will have removed his access by now.

I'll have to hassle with Shaw, but It should not be too bad because I am the Executor and have Power of Attorney over everything.

What hassle this is, though. I got his old machine working today, but it made a terrible noise when it started and took over half an hour to load. But the backup drive dying --that's the icing on a very nasty cake.

Thanks, oldbroad. It's really the last thing I need right now, especially since I'm not sleeping and can barely think. I've been worried about that computer for years, but at least there was a backup, until now.

I just want to chime in and say that I understand only too well the enormity of having to try to deal with this stuff when you are already so depleted and can barely think straight. You have all my empathy. I hope you can get this sorted.

The total and utter brain fog I had after my 2nd husband died would not have allowed me to even do THIS much. I was helpless. I'm glad you got the email thing figured out though. I figured it was going to take some phone calls.

The noise when starting up could have just been fans, but the fact it took half an hour says it could be the hard drive. So, it's hard to tell. I also wonder when the last time it was opened up and the dust and cat hair blown off the components - especially the cooling fins on the processor. It is still possible to get your information off that drive though. I've done it several times. I mounted a failing hard drive into a working computer' when I booted up the computer, I could "see" the old drive and access the information. I then transferred files, documents, pictures etc. over to the working computer. I helped Greyfuss do this when his old computer died and he didn't lose any of his precious pictures of his grandson.

I know all this is just too overwhelming right now. I know drives fail, but this is just NOT good timing.

I'm taking both the computer and the backup drive in to have them backed up again, and yes, my guess is that the computer is full of cat hair and dust.

Anyway, regarding the email account, I contacted the administration at Simon Fraser university. Because he was faculty his email was personal and all I have to do to get it reinstated is prove that I'm the Executor for his estate. They actually aren't allowed to cut off a personal email without contacting the Executor, so someone at SFU made a huge mistake.

It is bad timing, but it gets my mind off things temporarily. Gives me something to shake my fist at instead of the uncaring universe.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I thought the same thing. Just a few hours of being mad at something besides the universe. It is hard to believe someone at the University made such an egregious error. How do they know that you, as executor, don't need access to his email for some time...
