I've decided to run through the entire Mass Effect oevre, using the Legendary Edition. I got my Shep loaded up and ready to rumble.

I had forgotten what Mass Effect was like, it's been so long. What a great start to a great series.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

It will be.

I do notice, though, that I'm not nearly as adept at the hacking skill as I was 15 years ago. I mean, even the easy ones are tricky for me now, and I remember flying through difficult locks in my previous game all those years ago, looking forward to the challenge.

Clearly, it's the fault of my mouse and probably my mouse pad, too..

So, part way through ME 2 and remembering how much I enjoyed these games back in the day.

Some observations: I think they must have revamped the MAKO, the little lander you travel in when you land on planets. Driving it is smooth and fun. The graphics look cleaner and crisper than I remember.

Mass Effect2: I don't know how I missed it during my playthrough of the game when it first came out, but I am having a blast working out who is voice-acting various characters.

I got Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck, Dexter) right away -- partly because of her distinctive accent and also the character's mouth resembles hers a bit.

Then I had a head-slapping moment when I recognized Seth Green (Oz, in Buffy) as the pilot Joker and don't know how I missed that in ME 1.

Then there's the Krogan Squad member who sounds suspiciously like Michael Dorn.

And the Illusive man is obviously Martin Sheen. I just finished watching Frankie and Grace and so it came to me immediately.

I'm trying to see if I can find any more.

Nice observations! My son played through this remastered version and enjoyed it very much. Glad you're having fun with it.

When I first played these games they seems so difficult. They were probably among my very first action-oriented games, very much unlike Baldur's Gate and the other isometric games I'd been playing for so long. Now it's a breeze. I should have have upped the difficulty setting a bit.

What a great way to have some fun! I'm toying with playing the Metro series again. But Skyrim first!

You know, I have all the Metro games, but never really got very far into them. I should give them a go.

One thing I am appreciating about the ME games is that they're relatively short. I am absolutely dying to play another game of Dragon Age 3 and Witcher 3, but I feel as though I need to book off a couple of months for each of them. And then there's Cyberpunk, which I happen to love even amidst all the criticism, and there has been content added since I last played it, so it's another long game I want to replay.

Wow. It's been a while.

I stopped playing for a few months and came back to this a couple of weeks ago. I'm now in the middle of ME 3, which is new territory for me. It's fun. I don't get all the hate, frankly. It's not much different from the earlier games.

I've just played two very long quest sequences that I think must have been DLC because of their length. One of them ended up with a drunken party in Shepherd's new luxury apartment, with all the crew members getting blasted and making utter fools of themselves. That was fun.

Otherwise it's much of the same, with some consequences from decisions made in the two previous games.

Anyway, next up is Mass Effect: Andromeda.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I haven't played Mass Effect 3 but my son has. I think a lot of the complaints about the game stemmed from the ending, which I believe they addressed through a patch/update. He always thought it was a good game.

He also played Andromeda and enjoyed that as well.

There are a couple of things I don't like, one of them being the attacks when you zip around the galaxy looking for assets. It's just annoying. If it was occasional, it would be fun, but it's every single time you look for something.. Every. Single Time. The other thing is the need to constantly refuel. Both of those aspects of the game detract from the fun of exploration.

I think I'm getting close to the end since I'm not getting any new quests. All that's left is the searching the galaxy for assets, and then I bump up against the two complaints I have. Soon I'll just get on with the end game and head on over to Andromeda.

Kinda sorta where I was with Skyrim. No new quests unless I wanted to do some really ugly things and found that just wasn't fun.

Overall, though, ME 3 is more of the same good fun.

In the ME games I miss the open exploration of a sandbox world, but there's still a lot to like about it. I particularly like the way decisions you make in the first two games come back to bite you -- or reward you -- in the later game. Some of them are subtle; others hit you in the face.

So, finished Mass Effect 3. I really liked it -- I loved that some of your party members follow you all the way through all three games. By the end of the series they feel like real friends. Good action, good story line. Overall, I like it better than the other two games.

My only real complaint is that a choice or two made in ME 2 can prevent you from getting the best ending in ME 3, and that I find annoying because the pressure to make all the right choices means you end up referring to game guides instead of just enjoying the game. And that, in my opinion is a huge negative. It certainly impaired my enjoyment of the game.

Anyway, on to Andromeda, I guess.

Andromeda does not resemble the Mass Effect games much if at all (so my son tells me). So if you think of it as an entirely distinct game from the series, you might well enjoy it more.

Andromeda has some of the same bones, I can see, but it's open world, has quick travel, and moves really fast, at least so far. Since I woke up really early this morning I loaded it up, coffee in hand, at about 5 am. I thought I was going to hate it -- and some of the menus are messy and hard to understand -- but overall, I like the gameplay. I only wish I could control my party members the way I could in the first 3 games.

EDIT: I like this game. I'm not attached to my character the way I was with my Shep, but then again I created my Shep years ago.

The gameplay is a bit like a cross between Witcher 3, with points of interest all over the map, and the original Mass Effect games. It's open world and from the sound of it, there will be a few worlds to actually explore.

EDIT: Okay, now I understand how the menus work, and the game is becoming lots of fun. I'm on a second planet now, quite a different landscape. The exploration is the same as in ME 1 on planets; that is, you're in a little rover cruising around looking for points of interest and mining for minerals and coming across enemy bases, plus the main quest locations, kind of a melding of the gameplay in ME1 and ME 2 and 3 but expanded.

So far, it's great.

So. ME: Andromeda.

Good graphics, smooth gameplay, lots and lots to do, nice character development options, open world planets to explore....and it's boring. I don't care about my mission, I don't feel any connection to my companions, and I'm not remotely attached to my character. I think I'm about halfway through and am going to take a break.

Yeah, boring is NOT a good thing for a game like this. I'm getting a little bit of that feeling with my character in Fallout: New Vegas.

I loved Fallout New Vegas but yes, I know what you mean. You don't really get attached to your character.

The Bioware games really excelled at the companions, and of course in Mass Effect you can carry your Shepherd through the three games so you can get pretty attached to her.

I'm going to go and check out all the new stuff in Cyberpunk. I haven't played it for over a year.

Maybe you already know this, but Witcher 3 now has a next-gen update that is free to all who already purchased the game on GOG.

You can read about it here.

Yes, I'm looking forward to playing another run through of Witcher 3, too. That game is in my top 5 of all time.

I'm saving another run through the Dragon Age gems until the next one comes out. Inquisition is a very long game, so It'll be another marathon.

I left Andromeda on my computer as I might go back and peck away at it from time to time.

Have you played Witcher 3 before, Draclvr? Maybe I should just load it up and we can play along.

I got about half way through it and don't remember why I quit... I loved the game. Maybe I got stuck somewhere. I'm just starting a new one! I like that idea!

I'm all loaded up.

Last time I played we ended up going to Vancouver for a week for medical things and I didn't go back to the game afterward, so given the recent updates this is a perfect time. I love this game!

EIDT: Wow. I don't think my laptop can handle the updated game. Seems odd, given that the original ran flawlessly on the 8 year old Alienware. It just lags and jumps and the mouse jumps all over the place.
