After a short introductory sequence suggestive of what is to come,
Walter gets out of bed with a headache. He can’t find his wife and
daughter, and after puzzling his way through his house, his daughter’s
room eventually gives way to the circus that it is clear they are all part of.

And off we go.

Another stellar review by flotsam! You should REALLY write reviews for PC gamer, as well; yours are always so well-written, consice...and a joy to read.
--I had planned on purchasing this game, but am lately so weary of developers that do not allow saving-at-will. Especially for us older gamers (or those with responsibilities...which is mostly anybody); we like to quit at our own pace and resume games at our leisure.
DEVs take note: LOTS of developers (major game titles and indie ones) allow manual saving and/or multiple save slots in their games, aside from the once-in-a-while checkpoint saves or the dreaded one-save-only.

robedits, count me in your corner with the saving issue. That is usually a deal breaker for me. I need to be able to quit if necessary and not have to go back and replay something over and over. I did end up getting this one as the saves are pretty generous - like every 10 minutes or so. But it is STILL a source of irritation for me. I can deal with save on exit in addition to generous checkpoints, but that's about it.

Thanks for the positive comments. Its always good to know what readers think, positive or negative, as it will inform future reviews.
I don't always remember all the things I try and include in every review, but whether you can manually save or not is something that I know is important for many players (myself included) so I make a point of trying to at least remember to include that grin

I always look forward to reviewing flotsam's reviews! It's so nice to only have to add maybe a missed punctuation mark in an entire review because they are so well-written. Most of the time, they also make me smile!

So, I finished the game today. I was caught up and it was too cold outside to do much, so I granted myself a day of gaming! This was one I couldn't stay out of because I was so caught up with the story. The lack of saving at will was a disappointment, but as flotsam noted, the save system was tolerable. I now appreciate his comments about a couple of the puzzles. Well-done to the developer. I will restart the last chapter at least a couple more times to get a different ending or two! It's not point and click, but the WASD and mouse are my favorite navigation, so I liked that a lot.

This game reminded me very much of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter with the graphics and lone commentary by the main character.

I may re-think purchasing this one, even without save slots. Seems from what I've read that the game auto-saves at enough points, and if there are chapter replays that makes it more appealing to me, as well. Looks like an interesting storyline.
One question: is it visually a dark game, with lots of can-barely-see-things environments? That's sometimes a no-go for me, as well, even if it fits a storyline.

Yes, there are parts of it that are not dark, but very "red" and difficult to see. But I think there are only a couple of them. I was able to make out enough to muddle my way through though. The woods part was dark, but the flashlight was more than adequate.

I agree. There are some sequences in which the overall colours add to the complexity but there are ways through them which don't leave you simply flailing in the 'dark'. And the flashlight in the woods works fine yes
