The time has finally come, Riven is available right now on PC, Mac, and Meta Quest devices! This brand-new, re-imagined, and expanded version of Riven offers a deeper story, new captivating visuals, and a journey that stays true to the original release while also expanding on Riven’s breathtaking world. The wait is finally over! Experience Riven like never before in this from-the-ground-up remake of the 1997 classic. Check out the launch trailer here.Check out the official website here.Spokane, United States - June 25, 2024—Following a successful debut of their Demo version at Steam Next Fest, where Riven was among the top 50 best-performing titles, Cyan Worlds is pleased to announce that Riven, the modern remake of their acclaimed narrative puzzle-adventure masterpiece, is now available globally for Windows PCs through Steam and GOG, Macs with Apple Silicon via Mac App Store, and Virtual Reality on Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 via the Meta Store! To celebrate the game’s release, Windows and Mac players can enjoy a 10% launch discount for a limited time.
Remaking Riven brought together some of the creative minds behind the original Riven: The Sequel to Myst (1997), including Rand Miller, Richard Vander Wende, Mark DeForest, as well as new music contributions from Riven’s original composer, Robyn Miller. By the team’s admission, creating a real-time 3D version of the game that was faithful to their original vision was always something Cyan Worlds wanted to explore. With the rise of real-time 3D game engines and a few 3D game titles under their belts, the team at Cyan Worlds decided to test the limits of Unreal Engine 5 and rebuilt Riven from scratch, with complete freedom of movement, hand-crafted 3D environments and modern controls.
“We waited 27 years to revisit Riven… not just because we wanted to make sure the technology could handle it, but because we wanted to make sure WE could handle it,” says Rand Miller, CEO and Co-Founder of Cyan. “We learned lessons over the course of projects like Obduction, Firmament, and Myst that would allow us to build something that would do Riven justice. Beyond that, we were looking to enhance the world building resonance of the original, with fresh designs to surprise our old fans and immerse a whole new generation of players.” Riven is a modern remake of 1997’s monster hit Riven: The Sequel to Myst and is a love letter to classic narrative-driven puzzle games of the ’90s. When exploring Riven's decaying age, the player will feel like an archeologist, slowly unraveling the mysteries revealed by carefully exploring Riven’s five enigmatic islands. Players will lose themselves in the world as they uncover clues, decipher foreign languages, and immerse themselves in the game’s intricate lore.
Key Features: • Intricate Storytelling and Mind-Bending Puzzles: Challenge your intellect with Riven’s cunning puzzles woven throughout its narrative.
• Immersive Environments and Stunning Graphics: Explore surreal islands, each meticulously crafted with unparalleled attention to detail, from dense, lush jungles to awe-inspiring caverns.
• An Expanded World To Explore: Encounter an immersive and visually stunning world that will captivate newcomers and reveal new mysteries for long-time fans.
• Fully Re-imagined Gaming Experience: Experience Riven like never before, with free movement through a real-time 3D environment. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer returning to Riven or a newcomer eager to explore Riven’s mysteries for the first time, this immersive and visually stunning world will captivate you.
• A Truly Immersive Experience Developed in Parallel for Flatscreen and VR: Cyan Worlds is simultaneously developing the flatscreen and VR versions of the game to ensure a high-quality experience regardless of players’ platform of choice. About Cyan Worlds Founded by brothers Rand and Robyn Miller in 1987. In 1991 Cyan began work on Myst. The goal: create a new kind of experience that felt more like a place than a game. There would be no dying, no shooting, no starting over, and no inventory – dramatic breaks from “traditional” gaming. Myst was about finding yourself lost in a world, exploring it to gain understanding, and ultimately becoming part of the story. The public response was nothing short of phenomenal.
To date, sales for Myst and its sequel Riven have sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Myst also holds the honor of being the best-selling video game of the 20th century; a record that was not surpassed until 2003.
After five games in the Myst series, Cyan turned its attention to making an exciting new kind of Myst world. Uru (Myst Online) allows players to join the adventure of a lifetime in the caverns of D’ni, a neverending world that lets players connect and explore together. It spawned a thriving community and is still available to explore for free. More recently, Cyan Worlds has created titles supporting 2D and VR gameplay, including Obduction, Firmament, and a remake of Myst for 2D and VR.
Cyan Worlds looks forward to releasing their games currently in development and revealing new, exciting worlds yet to come. They draw from over three decades of experience to tell stories in intriguing and unexpected ways and continue to look for innovative ways to subvert standard videogame tropes.
(VERY) Happy Gaming!

The game is BEAUTIFUL! I have a 5 year old Dell desktop PC. Still robust, but by no means one of the best available anymore. (I"m not playing the VR version; don't have VR equipment). THat said, the game is VERY well optimized on my not new-anymore PC even with all the grfx settings maxed out at "EPIC." Very little fan noise on my end. That, to me, is amazing for a game that looks THIS good. I'm using mouse/KB only (I don't have controllers or a gamepad). Stunning...and I mean STUNNING...graphics; I can move around and navigate menus easily with M/KB. Great sound design (original music/lush score, great environmental sounds). Best water effects (ocean, dripping water, running water etc) I've ever seen. There are some different, additional and/or revised puzzles here and there compared to the original Riven (or so I've heard; I don't quite remember everything from the original Riven). Steam also has the game itself at a discount right now ($31.49). For an extra $9...and I think it'll wind up (at least for me) being well worth it, the Riven store page on Steam also has available a "companion guide", which is a color PDF...over 100 pages!.... with every puzzle solved, from minor to major hints to outright solutions, in chapter order. Easier to alt-tab out to use this than for me to alt-tab to a you tube video (if someone ever makes a video walkthrough). You can copy and paste the PDF to your desktop from the game's install files to easily access it. Another great thing to note: multiple save slots, so old GBers like me can save at will (I've used five save slots so far and I just began chapter 2-Jungle Island, and it appears as if there are even more slots; how many more I can't yet say). This is so rare in big-budget games nowadays. I am thoroughly enjoying this visual/aural masterpiece; Cyan did this re-design of RIven SO well. FYI: it's about a 25-GB download, so be prepared to wait!

I concur with what robedits has said. It is visually and aurally quite delightful (although I wasn't as enamoured of the digitally produced people compared to the FMV in the original). I am about to start learning numbers
Quantity has a quality all of its own

Thank you, BrownEyedTigre and robedits for all the info 👍 A “saving at will” facility is getting me very tempted, I must say

This game had been in development since 2009, as documented on the Starry Expanse website. I bought the deluxe edition and am diving into it now. I've played the original Riven several times, and I think it is the best among the 5 Myst games. Here is a brief comparison the old and new versions. The actor looks so real in the remake that I cannot believe that isn't a live actor.

I've played the remake for about 2 hours. Graphics have been updated to modern standards, but FMVs (full-motion videos with live actors) in the original game have been replaced with computer graphics -- and from the YouTube comments I got, many people aren't happy about that. Some new puzzles and areas have been added as well, notably a "starry expanse" hub for accessing different islands. The "throne room" near the beginning has been moved to another location. In the original game, you can climb underneath the locked wooden door that leads to the rotating room at the beginning. But in the remake you can't do that; you have to find another way to open it. All these changes here and there are clearly attempts to make the game "fresh" even to those who've played the original game many times, like I have. With everything considered, I would still say the remake largely retains the feel of the original game.
