Hi everyone,

I was wondering what kind of gameplay you prefer in first person puzzle games ?
I'm especially interested in players that like the games from eg/ mc2Games and m9Games, the Rhem series, the Myst series, and similar.

For instance, when I'm playing a 2d game I always wish I had more freedom to look around and explore. But when I'm playing a 3d game, it feels like some of the atmosphere is lost ...
So, personally, I'm leaning slightly towards prerendered, but I'm curious how others feel about it. smile

Good question. I haven't played enough games of this type to offer an opinion, but other GameBoomers here should be able to answer the question. wave

I am not familiar enough with the gaming terms to even know what kind of game I'm playing so I can't answer this. blush

smile No problem ...

Generally, 2d means you move around by clicking arrows on the screen, while in 3d you move around by pressing the WASD keys on the keyboard.

I prefer the go anywhere nature of 3D as I find it enhances my immersion, especially when you can ‘steer’ with the mouse and pretty much only use the W key. That said, I thoroughly enjoy a well made 2D experience and the atmosphere can certainly be a high point.

2D for me! I prefer mouse only and I get sea sick when it roams too much!

Good point : motion sickness. I'm also rather prone to it ...

I guess player preference is probably around 50% either way.
As a developer, I also find it a bit of a tricky issue. On the one hand, 2d games are technically easier to make. But games can get huge (Neyyah !) and animations must be rather limited because they take up a lot of space. On the other hand, making a 3d game gives the developer more freedom to iterate and adjust. But they are technically more difficult to make because of the 3d math and physics.

I like them both in their own ways, as long as it's well done and suits the game. However, most of the adventure games I like have prerendered graphics. So many adventure games with 3d movement tend to be walking simulators or horror games with no story at all. There are many exceptions to that of course, with the Tex Murphy games as excellent (and very early!) examples.

I agree with Mikael; although I have played several 3D games that are worthwhile.

Mikael brings up another interesting point : story.
I thinks there's a subdivide here as well : classic adventure games seem to be mostly story driven ; classic 'escape rooms' focus more on puzzles and exploration (usually with some light story elements).
