Hey, this might be good news for us old-fashioned players that actually want to save the game when we want to, instead of having to replay long boring cutscenes just because dinner happened to be ready at the wrong time. This is a rare feature nowadays, although it costs nothing to implement in a game. I won’t go on a rant about this again since it might result in a tirade as long as it would risk crashing the GameBoomers’ server.
BUT, if you go to the Steam main page, and just click the looking glass, you get to the search page, without stupid questions being asked, as when you click ”Browse” in the top menu. In the menu to the right, scroll down to ”Narrow by accessibility feature”. In that section, check ”Save Anytime”. This narrows the search to games in which you can save at any point in the game.
A very interesting thing about this is that Steam now labels this as a ”feature”. For the last 15 years or so, I’ve been under the impression that this generally has been conceived as an antiquated mechanism.
There are also some other interesting functions listed in the same section, such as custom volume controls, and whether the game includes timed elements.

Watch me jumping up and down with joy! In my experience with other gamers, the save at will feature is a #1 positive for an adventure game.

I'm looking at my Steam page and don't have a clue what you're talking about Mikael. What looking glass?
Oh, never mind. I see what you mean. I have never actually clicked ON that, I just used the search box not ever realizing you could click on it.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention!!!

So if I understand correctly what it does is filter the games where you can save at will? A nice 'feature' indeed, but not nearly as interesting as you explaining why it is so easy to implement that capacity in a game. Which in y view should be compulsory. If you have explained it before Mikael just point me in the direction.

I see what you mean. I have never actually clicked ON that, I just used the search box not ever realizing you could click on it. Yes, that's a pretty weird interface. You can probably get to that search page in some other way too, but I haven't found any. If you have explained it before Mikael just point me in that direction. You mean explain why it's easy to implement? I don't think i've elaborated on that anywhere, and I don't think I would be able to, because I'm a lousy programmer (I've been helped by other wonderful people with that in my games). But every game has some kind of save system (with a few exceptions, with the old game ”D” coming to mind, but never mind that), and the one that most of us despise is when it saves automatically at certain points in the game. The difference between saving at certain points in the game, and allowing the player to save at will is minuscule, programming wise. So when you can't save when you want to in a game, it’s not a matter of budget or competence, but an intentional game design decision.

Good to know thanks. I’m going to go to my computer as I can’t figure it out on my phone.

Got it….. thanks again. I hate it when I can’t save at will.

Nice find Michael. This could come in handy during Steam's Autumn Sale coming up

Thanks for this tip! One thing I noticed is that a game I just finished playing (and LOVED), Neyyah, has the ability to "save anytime" and has multiple save slots, as well (at least more than 50, by my count)...yet it's not included in this Steam drop-down "category." So I assume it's up to the DEV of a certain game to let Steam KNOW they have this feature? Listing this option has only been possible since April 2025. This means that it wasn't available when Neyyah was listed. However, I'm pretty sure that Steam developers are alerted when new options like this are made available, so that they can update their game info. I see games that are over a century old that have the feature checked. I've had some contact with Aaron, who made Neyyah, and I'll send him a message to point this out. I've also find a much better way to check if the feature is checked for the game: When you're at the game's store page, just scroll down a bit, and click on "Accessibility Features" in the right menu, and you'll see directly of the feature is checked under "Gameplay".
