What do you think about disabling Fast Start Up? I have been reading a bit about it and am wondering if disabling it could be helpful with my BSOD's. I don't want to do it though if it can cause other problems.

Drac should be the one who weighs in on this, but interestingly when googling this I saw several mentions of Fast Startup and the fact that it can cause BSODs.

Disabling fast startup might help you or not. I had to do it some time ago when I was trouble shooting an issue and I never noticed it doing anything sketchy. Give it a try and see if it helps. If you don't notice any change, you and always re-enable it.

Thanks. I think I will try it as long as it can't hurt something else.

Marian, I did not actually see that it can cause BSOD's but what I read really made me think it could be an issue, something about drivers and kernels. My very non-tech self feels I have a problem that has to do with my network something or other.

It's not going to hurt anything to try it!

I changed it so I'll just have to wait and see. I don't get the BSOD at any particular time. Sometimes once a week, sometimes maybe more. Once I think I went about a month without one. I do keep a sloppy scribbled record, so if two months go by without one, I might think it helped. Fingers crossed!

I had to look up BSOD not having any idea what this was. I have experienced this "blue screen of death" a few times many years ago. It was never a good thing. One time I got this nasty virus that caused it and had to search how to get rid of it using another computer. In safe mode I got rid of it. It was a problem for many. A fix was out there and it worked.

Olbroad you say you get the BSOD quite often. There is definitely a serious issue running on your computer. I will be surprised if disabling "fast startup" works but if it stops the BSODS I would still think you have issues with your computer causing them. Here are some suggestions you can try to help get rid of these BSODs:

Orion, this is an issue that has been ongoing for oldbroad for quite a long time. She has already tried multiple fixes, but they still happen now and then. Disabling Fast Startup is known to stop the problem in some cases. At this point, it's a what can you lose to try it situation.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of the infamous BSOD! I remember some cartoon strip about 20 years ago where the little kid dressed as a BSOD for a Halloween costume because it was so horrifying. evil

Orion, thank you for the links. My biggest problem really (not to contradict what Draclvr said) is troubleshooting. I am afraid to try most of the suggestions that I see for fear of running into some other issue. The error codes are never quite the same and I have looked up a lot of things, none of which are very specific. It seems that everything I've looked at can mean a hundred different things. I don't have the expertise to eliminate all of those things. Mostly, it seems I have some network problem. I'm hoping that a full shutdown (as opposed to the half shutdown/half hibernation that the computer apparently does while in "fast start up" mode) will be helpful. If not, it hasn't hurt anything to disable it, not even a slower start up. New computers can have the problem also. In fact, when I first bought this computer I encountered a Green Screen of Death at least once. I don't know what caused it but it didn't become a regular issue. I remember posting about it here and it seems like only Jenny100 had ever heard of it.

I remember we tried driver conflicts and then talked about your network issues too.

Right Drac, but that was about it. Some suggestions when you Google say to run SFC scan now and DISM and Diagnostics and Mem Tests and what not. I am afraid to do any of that. I don't even know how to boot into Safe Mode and (though in years past I would do it) don't even want to attempt that.

Yeah, I get it. I used to do all that, but am much less anxious to start meddling too deep.

smashpc BSOD!

I had a bad feeling it was going to do it because it was gurgling a lot. Stupid me ignored it tonight and paid the price. By that I mean I lost a lot of work I had put into a Nonogram puzzle. Lately when I hear it gurgling I save and exit just in case but tonight I didn't and it did.

When a computer is making noises like that, you most likely have a hardware issue. I'm off to make applesauce today, so won't have a chance to look into this any further. Maybe open it up and make sure your fans are working. I can't remember, but were you monitoring the temps inside too??

Have you run a FULL antivirus scan maybe to eliminate an issue there? I take it you have. I wish you were able to do some of the things mentioned. It could help. It may be just a matter of time you lose it

This last BSOD, did you have fast startup disabled?

EDIT: Applesauce is one of my favorites. I have never had homemade, bet it is very good!

I don't know. It feels like this computer has always made these noises but that may not really be true. When it makes that noise the little light is usually blinking or on solid as if it is downloading or doing something. It kind of sounds like my coffee pot when I'm brewing a pot. One time I actually looked in my task manager while it was happening and saw something that seemed to be the cause but now I can't remember what it was. I know I Googled it at the time but don't remember what it said. I'll have to do that again. I forgot about that. Googling sounds like it could be my hard drive and I do hear the noise intermittently during the day but it does seem worse at night. Maybe because of the gaming?

I did test the temps a few times, yes.

Orion, unfortunately no. I look at that full scan button and just can't imagine how long it will take and then I don't do it. I have only been doing quick scans and smart scans with Norton, and Malwarebytes does its thing. Yes, fast start up is disabled so it didn't help.

When I do a full scan I start it before bed. It's done when I wake up. You should give it a try

That absolutely does sound like your hard drive which would also support the potential cause of the BSOD's. I know you don't like to do these things, but really, running a check disk would be a good thing to do. You could give it a command which would also fix any sectors that had errors. If you want to give it a try, these are pretty good instructions. It has my favorite - pictures!

Will it instruct me to do things during the process? That is what worries me. Or will it just do its thing and then let me know the results? Also, how long might something like that take?

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

It just does its thing and lets you know. How long depends on the size of your drive and IF you have any bad sectors. A long time ago I had to run chkdsk on a drive several times. I just got a book and read while it did its thing.
