On July 14, Microsoft's Patch Tuesday fixed a staggering 570 security flaws, roughly four times what it patched last July, and the biggest single batch in the company's history.

Three of those were zero-days, meaning attackers knew about the hole before Microsoft shipped the fix. Two are already being exploited, but they target enterprise server software (Active Directory and SharePoint) that most home users don't run, so you're likely not the target there. The one that matters for everyone is a BitLocker flaw that lets someone with physical access to your PC bypass drive encryption and read your files. If your laptop ever gets lost or stolen, that encryption is exactly what's supposed to protect you, and until this patch is installed, it might not.

Microsoft is openly telling people to stop delaying updates. It warned this month that AI is now helping attackers find and weaponize bugs within hours of disclosure, and urged everyone to patch within three days. The old habit of waiting a couple of weeks to dodge a buggy update is getting genuinely risky.

The exception is if you have a Dell. Certain Intel-based Dell machines are hitting random shutdowns, overheating, sluggish performance, and fast battery drain after installing the July update. The cause is a conflict between Windows' new USB-C Connection Manager and Intel's power and thermal driver. Microsoft has already blocked the update from reaching affected Dell PCs while it works on a fix.
