I'm curious how everyone approaches their adventure gaming time these days. Are you looking for games that fit into a busy lifestyle or do you enjoy setting aside an evening or day of gaming?

Do you prefer games that are easy to play in 30-60 minute sessions, where you can save, come back later, and still remember what you were doing? Or even enjoy a game that is complete after an hour.

Or do you enjoy adventures that are better suited to longer gaming sessions where you can really immerse yourself for several hours at a time?

Has your preference changed over the years?

I'd love to hear which style you prefer—and why.

I used to love the hours at a time but as I've aged it seems I'm looking to steal minutes for gaming. 30 minute windows are the norm for me now.

Long gaming sessions were my norm for many, many years but health issues now prevent that.

So, I have to stick with games that allow me to “save at will” these days and in that way I can still play full length Adventures but just take longer getting through them.

Preferably a game would immerse me for hours but also allow me to just play for a short time if that is what I chose to do.

I'm not sure if it's me or the games, but not too many *invite* me to play for long periods of time these days, even if I really like the game. I will admit though that I don't really seem to like most games the way that I used to. I'm just a grump now!

And, Ana, don't think that just because I stopped pressuring you to include YOUR answers to these questions, that I haven't noticed that you don't!

Fair enough! I deliberately look for short games or games that can be played and continued a week or weeks later without really needing to refresh my memory. I just don't have time to game like I used to.

I reserve 7 pm to 9pm Mon - Thur, sometimes longer, sometimes not.

If a new game has Syberia, Broken Sword or Carol Reed in the title, then I play for as long as I can. When re playing old favourites I still play as long as I can but am much more willing to stop and return later. However I want to Save when I want in a game. A really good game can prevent me from housework, cooking and shopping, which is a bonus

I prefer long games with a nice story arc, but have never been able to game for more than 1/2 to 1 hour at a time. The exception is a weekly Zoom session with friends where we socialize and then take turns (between 3 of us) "driving" the mouse on my computer. We typically do this for a 3 hour session. I've been amazed at how responsive the cursor movement and graphics updates are for them, despite being remote. We are currently playing The Final Chapter and it's working great.

Having the ability to save at will with many save slots is a must for these scenarios.

I used to like long gaming sessions but tend to play in hourly chunks these days. I can get drawn in and still be playing after that, but on the whole about an hour does it. I find I can remain focussed and absorb the game better, rather than just having it wash over me. Of course, the game itself might keep me locked in but I find that isn't the norm these days. Some of that will be me, but some is definitely the nature of the games I end up playing.

Length of gaming sessions vary greatly for me. They can be anywhere between a few minutes (if I'm interrupted) and several hours. The only important thing for me in these matters is that the game doesn't force me to play a certain amount of time, or a certain number of scenes, before I can stop and continue later from where I left off (i.e. saving).

Depends! Foolish Mortals was just as enjoyable as Syberia 4. Similarly, if I dislike a game. e.g. The Jongest Journey, length of game means nothing. (No matter how long it is, it's not going to get better.) Manual saves are very important. If that feature in not available, it's a deal breaker, pure and simple.

Somewhere along the line I retired; turned 80; and found myself with lots of time. As a result I can reload and play all my old favorites (The "syberias", most of the "Mysts", and especially "URU") for hours at a time. There are very few advantages to getting old, but that is one of them.

I haven't played a PC Adventure in a long while, probably about 3 years. I have been playing what would be considered Casual games on my iPad. I seem to have averaged 20 - 30 in 2024 and 2025. While most are short escape games, there are longer 'full' adventures like House of Da Vinci and Isoland 4.
Part of the reason is portability--I can resume play at work or in different rooms in the house. The other is time constraint. I'm still working full time , and am moderating at another forum.
I have my Steam account and quite a few games waiting for me there. I also haven't been able to let go of my extensive Adventure game collection (boxes and all), along with 3 old computer towers and accessories to play them. I can see myself trying to get something like Shivers or Morpheus to run on my old Win98 one day when I decide to retire.
Nice to see this community is still going. I see posts on my FB feed, which is how I found this discussion.
