I have installed it according to inferno and got choppy sound. Updated the video driver- then it wouldn't even start.
updated the sound driver- no change, still choppy.
I don't run any other applications and ZoneAlarm only runs when I'm on-line. I've tried tweaking every thing till the pc locked up.

any suggestions.

Updating the video driver isn't going to do any good with this old game. You may need to reduce video acceleration as well as audio acceleration. If that doesn't get rid of the choppiness, you may want to consider running it in Virtual PC, if you have that set up.

By the way, what instructions are you talking about? I see instructions for ***Journeyman Project 2*** on Inferno's site, but not Journeyman Project 3 or Legacy of Time. And the JP2 instructions include a patch that would definitely not be for JP3.

I'm playing JP3 now on XP and it plays very well. This is one
game that can be played from the hard drive which can often
reduce or eliminate audio and video choppiness. Try this.

1. Copy the contents of cd1 to a folder (say, C:\cd1 for example)
2. Do the same for cds 2,3,4 (copy to C:\cd2, C:\cd3, C:\cd4)
3. Create a text file on your desktop (call it JP3.cmd)
4. Right-click on the file, select edit, and copy and paste the
following lines (here, I'm assuming you are not using the drive
letters, w,x,y,or z.

subst w: c:\cd1
subst x: c:\cd2
subst y: c:\cd3
subst z: c:\cd4
exit

5. Save the file, close it, and doubleclick on it. Go to
MY Computer and you should now see the drives w,x,y and z.
If you open any of these drives you will see the contents of
the cds you copied.
6. Open drive x and install the game using the setup file.
7. Go the folder where you installed the game and right-click
on the Legacy.exe file, select properties, and click compatibility.
Check run in 640x480. Click OK. Now you should be able to play
the game without any disc-swapping.

Note that the connection between the cd folders and the drive
letters will last only as long as your current session. So
if you turn off or reboot your computer those connections will
be lost. Just remember to doubleclick the JP3.cmd file before
playing the game.

By "Inferno's instructions" I meant the general drill. I noticed she seemed to have had no problems with this particular game - and I had no trouble with Journeyman 2. Go figure.

I had installed the new video driver first ( yes, I knew it wouldn't help), because both new drivers were so big they were taking hours to download and I had started it first. And yes, I did a search, but nothing came up that seemed to apply to this issue.

- -ccbomer, since I turn off my pc when I'm through for the day or session, looks like your solution would be more trouble than it's worth.

This appears to be another one going to the discard, joining Sentinel and The Sacred Rings(motion sickness there).

Thanks every one, I really appreciate your input.

Did you try the compatibility mode?

It would be interesting to know if CCBomber's suggestion fixed your problem. If you don't want to use the subst commands that he mentions, you could probably use a CD emulation program instead. I think Nero may have one built in.

I haven't written any setup for JPIII. Nor have I played this particular game. It is listed in "My Personal Collection"
but as there is nothing after the title it can also denote that I haven't played it yet.

but maybe this webpage may help you

inferno,

The only thing on that page that is different from what I've already tried is the suggestion for DirectX8, Is this maybe one of those occasions when a particular version is needed? I'm running directX9.

Thanks so much for the help~

Almost certainly your sound problems are caused by your sound system running too fast for this old Win95 game. I have the same choppy sound when starting this game at the NEW, LOAD, etc. menu when the music starts unless I reduce hardware acceleration of sound to the Basic level; two clicks down.

Where you adjust hardware sound acceleration will depend on the hardware and software installed on your system. But anyone with DirectX installed should be able to adjust acceleration via DxDiag.

Robert,

I have just done that and was coming back to report success at last. Before I have always gone for the 1 click down.

Thanks everyone for all your help, now if only we could figure out a way to fix those games that make our heads spin.

Well, so much for that success. Waded through the long into and finally got to play the game - it promptly crashed to the desktop.
To heck with this game. I will buy no more games earlier than 1999. It's just too much hassle. Some one said that was part of the game, to see if we were smart enough to get it running. I play games for enjoyment not more stress and frustration just to get it to run.

Of course there are those new games that won't run either. frown

Just get yourself an old computer - 200 to 400 MHz or so, with Windows 95 or 98 and the old games from 10 years ago will run fine without tweaking. Otherwise Virtual PC is your best bet for games like this.

Do not give up on this wonderful game.
This XP fix has worked for multiple dozens of gamers. For the CD version, you may have to use W98 compatibility, but for the DVD version, no other tweaks are needed.

"You need to disable DirectX sound acceleration. Run the DirectX diagnostic tool
(Start->Run then type \"dxdiag\", and on the Sound tab set the \"hardware sound
acceleration level\" to \"no acceleration\".) Remember to re-enable it after
playing the game."

This does NOT mess up your audio om amy way/

Quite frankly I can't see spending $100 or more just to play a few persnickety games, although I have thought about it a couple of times. Virtual PC requires that you have the os to copy; there is another big expense, assuming I could find a copy of 98.

Thanks for your suggestions, if I find a game I would really like to play and having trouble, I'll try them all. I'm really not that fond of si-fi anyway.

Hi smile

SNAP !!

I installed this game in XP myself earlier this week and found that sliding the Audio Accelerator control down to NIL was all I needed to do to get the game running perfectly.
[I've always played it in Win98SE previously.]

It's a VERY good game and well worth a bit of tweaking thumbsup

Cheers.
