I have installed and uninstalled this one on my computer with an external DVD burner/player and use WINXP. However, no matter which way I try to open/start the game all I get is a black screen and no sound. I know others had issues with getting this one installed and running. Maybe someone can help me? My video card is an NVidia and I have DirectX 9 or 10, whatever is current update. Would checking and updating my drivers be of any use? I am usually very current with this stuff.
Love, Betty Lou

What model of Nvidia card do you have? They are not all created equal. Also post the version of drivers you're running. Click start-->run-->type dxdiag-->click ok. Then click the display tab. Tell what it says in the "Device Name" section on the left side of the page, and the "Driver Version" section on the right side of the page.

Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200. OP Sys WINXP Home Svc Pk2 Build 2600. DirX 9. DxDiag/Display Main Driver: nv4_disp.dll Version: 6.140010.9371 English
Does that help?

I have been out most of today, just had a chance now to check back here, guess I am being 'overlooked'?

Try updating your video drivers, Betty. Here's the latest version for your card.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_163.75.html

1. Download the drivers in the link above. Choose "save" and save the file to your desktop. After the download has finished...

2.Click start->control panel->add/remove programs.
3.Scroll down the list and find "Nvidia Drivers".
4.Click to hightlight Nvidia Drivers, then click change/remove. Un-install the drivers.
5.Follow the prompts and restart your machine. After your machine finishes booting, you should get a "new hardware found" message. Cancel or close that window and run the installer (.exe file) that you downloaded from Nvidia.

You're welcome. Once you've successfully installed the new drivers you can delete the .exe file that you downloaded from Nvidia.

Well, I am now frustrated and "in the black" - have followed your instructions step by step and now cannot access ANY of my games, black, black screen with no cursor no matter what I do and what I had on my computer before all this (NVIDIA software and drivers and display etc) is NOT in my recycle bin so now what do I do?

Betty Lou, you can roll back the drivers to what you had here.

I agree with Hawkavonpuka. Best just to go back to what you were using before. (Thanks for locating the link, Hawkavonpuka). It sounds like these latest drivers don't work with your FX 5200 card (even though they're supposed to work with the FX series).

I clicked on that link Hawk, and it tells me where to find the "roll back" feature, but when I open Control Panel and choose NVIDIA (device) there is NO DRIVER tab with the Roll Back Driver button as it says. What do I look for now? Am still having trouble. It's not so bad I cannot get CSI HE to run, but I was playing Wintersun and now IT won't run either! Other games I have on my hard drive and have played seem to be OK as is the new AG EUTS..... frown Just adds insult to injury cry

Betty Lou,

Are you going to "performance & Maintenence" in the contral panel, then "System", choose the "hardware" tab, then clicking on the "device manager" button. Once you're at the "Device Manager", double click "display adapters", then double click "Nvidia", the "driver" tab on mine is the second tab, with the options for updating, rolling back drivers etc. I hope this helps. wave

Sorry not to get to you before now, Becky.
I just got back home.

Try this:

Right-click My Computer icon (either on your desktop or in your start menu)
Choose Properties
Hardware tab
Device Manager button
Click the + next to Display adapters to expand
Double-click the listing for your video card
Driver tab
Do you see a button there for Roll Back Driver

(looks like TLC already answered you by the time I finished typing. Oh well...)

Hi TLC, tried what you suggest, found no "performance & maintenance option on 'control panel'.
Jenny100, I followed your step by step and I assume the 'roll back' feature worked for me BUT before I started all this just to see if I - with Robert's help - could get CSI HE to run because it would not run (black screen). And I was playing Undercover Operation Wintersun just fine with no problems. Now since all this mess and even with the 'roll back' Wintersun won't now open gives me the message "unable to initialize video mode: pixel format could not be set". So something still is not right. However, my Culpa Innata which would NOT run with the 'new drivers' is back to running just fine. Any ideas on what's wrong with my NVIDIA setup? I would hate to have to call my tech guy and pay for his help, even tho he is the best and would probably restore my setup back to what it was this AM before all this. If no one can help me get 'back on track' I guess that is what I will have to do. frown Where'd you go Robert?
Love, Betty Lou

It's possible that Operation Wintersun needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled after changing your drivers back and forth. That's just a guess though. After uninstalling it, delete the game folder to make sure it's gone and no bad settings have been saved. If you have any saves you want, move or copy them to a different folder before uninstalling.

I expect it's a matter of finding drivers that will work with all your games with your particular card. That can be tricky for old cards.

Does your tech guy usually troubleshoot your games for you?

Betty Lou, you could also do a system restore before all the mess started. But then, you would not be able to play the new game, maybe you should play that and then restore your system. I haven't played either game so I can't help with any in game settings.

Edit here: Sorry Jenny100, didn't see your post, forum is acting kind of strange today about seeing new posts. Anyway, I would do the system restore, I usually do a restore point before trying anything new, just in case the computer doesn't.

I think doing the system restore is the way I should go....but have forgotten how to do it! And as far as playing the new game, CSI HE, it wouldn't run before we started this whole mess, and it still will not run. The new driver download/install did not change that. Where is the System Restore again?

BL, remember next time to set a restore point before you do anything, just in case, then you can always go back to where you were. Hopefully Robert will come back and let us know what could have gone wrong here. I was here with the driver updates a short time ago and they didn't work and I was lucky enought to successfully roll back the drivers. I am sorry this did not work for you and I must say that I am very leery of updating drivers, I stay with what is working now.

I'm so sorry updating your drivers caused all this trouble, Betty. I had no idea. According to the Nvidia web-site those were the latest drivers for your video card.

As far as what could have caused it..I'd say that FX5200 is obsolete and needs to be relaced with a newer video card.

Ordinarily I would agree. However, what she had was not working, and up-dating the drivers should have been the answer.

Thanks to you all for trying so hard to help me. I have found my System Restore and tried it about 10 times, keep getting the message 'cannot restore from check point' even tho I chose different days and times for each of them. This is not working. And I have uninstalled and reinstalled Undercover Operation Wintersun and it still will not open. I will give serious thought to updating my video card - will talk to my 'techie' about it and see what he thinks. No he does not always help me 'tweak' the computer for my games, but when I run into a problem hubby and I cannot figure out how to solve, like this one, he is only a phone call away and will fit me in between his technical Business at a Computer Club discounted hourly fee....he is our club's main Technical person and runs our Problem Clinic once a month after the regular meeting at our Community Center. A very knowledgeable young man with lots of terrific personality. Will also try to install and run CSI on hubby's computer without 'tweaking' anything and see what happens. I don't know why Wintersun now won't run but that too may be solved when I call on Adam. Have a terrific, and safe, Thanksgiving everyone. Thanks again

Sorry to hear of your troubles! Not being able to do a system restore sounds like trouble.Could be a couple of things, such as a conflict with your av or firewall. That fx5200 should be enough to run Wintersun, but as Robert suggested,an upgrade would be a good thing.Calling on your computer club tech is probably for the best.Have a great Thanksgiving yourself!! Smile!!! happydance

Make sure you tell your tech that your system restore isn't working. Whatever affected that may also be affecting your games.

Thanks Jenny, I wondered about that and will remember to tell him. It may well be that something else is 'out of whack'. Funny thing is I installed Wintersun on hubbys computer and it too gives me a message about unable to access video - and he has a different video card than mine....very strange indeed.
