My pc crashed and lost all my games on an XP. Now have a new pc with Vista, I am in the middle of installing my games on new pc, but sadly, not all of them will work, I am especially upset about Moment of Silence and Paradise because I had almost finished them. Moment of Silence just will not play and Paradise did install but for some reason, it will not save. Anyone have any suggestions.

Hi Cornelia, sorry you are having problems with Vista, there is a list of games that will play here on glitches, sadly Paradise and Moment of Silence do not appear to be there.

Have you tryed using vista compatability mode set to xp or win98? Go to where you installed your game, right click on mos.exe (moment of silence exe) go to properties then compatability tab set to use compatability mode and set a OS you wish to try to see if the game works with one of them. Go through them all as 1 might work.

After your done click apply then go try the game out by double clickin mos.exe now to run the game and hopefully it will work.

Have you tried using compatibility mode for XP? Right click on the game's launch icon, then select properties->compatibility. I think there is also an option somewhere under the properties to "run as administrator". You might try that as well (even if you are already logged in as admin).

Are you getting any specific error messages? What exactly happens when you try to play these games? Is the problem with installing them or playing them?

Try this patch for Moment of Silence

for Paradise make sure that if you have an "emulation program" installed such as Daemon tools, disable the SecuROM emulation in the Daemon Tools options, disable Daemon Tools, or uninstall Daemon Tools all together. If you have another CD emulation program, you may need to make similar changes in order to not receive this error message.

If you need to try Compatibility mode

Once the game has been installed:

1. Find the game icon listed in your games directory.
2. Right click on the game and click on Customize. This will bring up the customize menu.
3. Select Play.
4. Select Edit.
5. This will bring up the Properties screen. Click the Compatibility tab.
6. Check 'run in compatibility mode' and then choose Windows XP or whatever operating system the game was designed for.
7. Press Apply then press OK. You will be back at the customize menu.
8. Close the customize screen.

The game should now be configured to run in Compatibility mode.

Another workaround would be to install the game into "MY Documents" folder or it's equvilent, first creating a separate folder for the game, then installing the game to that folder. Do not let the autoplay instal the game.

It was also be extremely helpful to others if you would let us know (in detail) what you did to get them running in Vista when or if you do.

If you're playing in a limited user account rather than an administrator account, that could be why the saves aren't working. Try using an administrator account if possible, or right-clicking the game exe and choosing "run as administrator" as Robert suggested.

Hmmm, I actually just finished replaying Paradise on my Vista PC and I had installed it normally & didn't use compatibility mode or anything. Game ran and played perfectly. Seems like everyone gets different results for what works on Vista and what doesn't.

Have you tried installing it in your User folder instead of the Program Files folder?? I had problems with The Sims not saving games when it was installed under Program Files, but once I installed under my User Documents folder the saving worked.

Hope you find a solution!

The Moment of Silence still will not work in compatibility mode. The Starforce copy Protection box keeps coming up saying Launching this application in the compatability mode is impossible. Please turn off the compatability mode on the compatability tab of the shortcut properties dialog. I tried every one of them win95 win98 snd 3 different xps. Thank you for trying to help.

My son fixed my pc that crashed with win xp on it with 3 new drives on it, it installed on that pc but I am not connected to the internet on that machine so of course Game Shadow would not work for the updates and the game refused to run on a pc that it played on before. Weird or what.

Thanks again for your support. Great Site.

You probably need to use this Starforce driver removal tool.
http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55

Since the XP computer is not connected to the net, you could get an inexpensive USB flash drive to copy downloaded files from your other computer onto your XP computer, or if the other computer has a CD burner you can tranfer files that way.

Transfer that removal tool to your XP computer and run it. Then download, tranfer and run CCleaner. Use the "Registry" icon to scan your registry and let it remove any issues it finds. You should then be able to install TMOS on the XP computer.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

I've seen USB flash drives for sale at my local drug store (Wal-Greens, Rite-Aid etc.), or Wal-Mart or perhaps Radioshack would have them as well.

I don't know what countries you guys live in, but it was the European versions of these games that used StarForce. The DVD version of Moment of Silence had StarForce. The US version (on CD) did not, and did not seem to have any copy "protection" at all. The European version of Paradise had StarForce while the US version used SecuROM. However the patch for Paradise may include StarForce, so if you patched Paradise, StarForce could still be a problem. I remember a couple of posts from people who were unable to play Paradise after patching it.

Anyway, if any of you have the US versions of the games, and didn't patch Paradise, the problem isn't StarForce (unless you got it from a different game).

Since Starforce is giving her an error message when she tries to install TMOS, wouldn't that mean her version has it? Do you think just running the registry cleaner might fix her up?

I think there's a way to tell if the Starforce drivers are installed by going into device manager and click "View"-->show hidden devices. If the drivers are present they should be listed there (IIRC). If it is listed, then perhaps she could command click and un-install them that way.

Ok after lookin about the net after some googling i found out that theres a old version of starforce that starforce never knew was on MOS for some reason or another or at least thats what someone said over at official forum said. Anyhow there are two patches to combat vista problems one is for German version and one for French version. I duno where you live or which version you have so i dont know if these will work but you can try them, they hopefully wont alter your language settings just the exe.

First of all heres the official forums as you can see theres a few topics there about vista, so have a read.

here

Here is the French vista compatibility update for MOS.

Here

Here is the German vista compatability update for MOS.

Here

Best of luck.

Yes. But I've lost track of how many people are having a problem in this thread, and I can't tell if any of them are using the European or US versions of the games.

I found these instructions for displaying hidden drivers
Quote:
1) Open the "Start" menu and choose "Run..."
2) Type in "cmd" (without the quotes) and click "ok".
3) At the cmd prompt, type in "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" (without the quotes) and press enter. (Note that nothing seems to happen--this is ok. We are actually setting an environment variable which is going to help us to see hidden devices)
4) On the next cmd prompt line, type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press enter. This will launch the Windows Device Manager Console.
5) In the Device Manager Console, from the "View" menu, select "Show Hidden Devices".

Click the + next to Non-Plug and Play Drivers

and this list of what drivers to look for

Look for any files on your system with these names (any extension):
prodrv03
prodrv04
prohlp01
prodrv05
prosync1
sfsync01
sfhlp01
prohlp02
prodrv06

Thanks guys & girls, I will have a look at these later when I have a bit more time. I have the European version as I live in London. I wished I had played it earlier, but you know how is with Adventure games, you start playing one and another one comes along and then you start playing that as well, I am sometimes playing 4 or 5 at once, especially with Paradise I was stuck in the game for 3 months at one time, (that was the bit in the swinging cage. It was only when I got a new pc last Christmas (the one that just crashed) with higher specs, that I managed to get out of the cage, but they were both xp and both games worked on them. That pc did not last long !

The swinging cage caused problems for a lot of people.
Too bad your working XP PC didn't last.
What happened to it? Is it fixable?

Re: Paradise

I have a vista laptop and I just installed Paradise and played it for a bit. It saved just fine. When you restart the game the scroll says "New Game" but if you scroll down it will say "restore game" and then you are right back where you choose to be.

I did a normal install and it worked just fine. Did not change to XP compatability.

Wow. I don't see how you do it. I'd be getting them all confused. I would probably be looking for a clue in one game that I needed to solve a puzzle in one of the others. You must be great at multi-tasking smile

Yes the xp machine is now working with new drives in it, but not connected to the net. But as I said earlier Moment of Silence did install, but Game Shadow did not let it run, also when I installed the game on Vista, it downloaded updates automatically ok, I then did a full install, but then the game comes up with the box saying the game will not run on Vista, looking at the dvd case, it says Win98, ME, 2000,XP, 64MB RAM. etc. I have 1000MG ram, on this machine, although that it not enough now a days for some newer games. Also it needs a patch at the beginning for his phone otherwise, if I can remember correctly, you can't get his neighbours phone number to help her. I tried to find the patch on the net, but no luck.

Is Game Shadow the publisher of the game? Does your version of the game use online activation as copy "protection?" If that's the problem, maybe you could connect your XP PC to the internet long enough for it to activate.

Quote:

Actually 1000 MB of RAM is not enough to run games on Vista. It's fine for XP, but Vista alone takes up almost 1000 MB of RAM. If you want to run games on top of it you should have at least 2000 MB of RAM.

Do you mean 1GB (1024MB)? If we're talking about the Windows XP computer, that should be plenty of memory for any adventure game. Vista, however, uses more memory, but TMOS is pretty old and not very demanding at all. You should be running 2GB in your Vista computer.

If you are running an anti-virus in the background, it will also use memory that needs to be focused on your game. You should always disable it, as you don't need it while you're gaming.

Game Shadow is just a method to patch a game, you dont need it per say if you can get the patches yourself and cut the middleman (GShadow) out.

Just use this patch for the English version of the game (US/UK whatever)

Thats true about the Ram, when I bought the pc I fully intended to buy more ram, but the ram in this pc is two blocks of 500 and no more space for anymore, so the only thing I can do is ditch the ram and buy 2 seperate 1GB so I am running with 2GB. I was furious, that there was not enough room, my other pc has four slots for ram.

Anyway thanks, for the help and advice. Bedtime now, been a busy day, its almost 11.30 p.m. here. Goodnight.

Well you can sell your existing ram so it doesnt seem like its costing as much and buy 2 sticks of 1gb each. (motherboard permitting it to be used) But this isnt really anything to do with getting these two games to work so thats for another discussion tbh. Lets get u sorted with geting the games workin first shall we. smile

I have emailed The Adventure Company about Moment of Silence problems installing with Vista, am still waiting a reply, hopefully they can suggest something. The Patch would not install posted by Skeeter22UK, thanks anyway. I don't hold out much hope, it obviously hates Vista. I have the game installed on my external 500GB hard drive, but I don't think it will work if I plugged the external into my other pc with xp, as it was installed on the drive via Vista.
