I'm trying to install King's Quest collection on Windows XP, and InstallShield Wizard keeps giving me an error. It says,
Setup has experienced an error.
Please do the following:
Close any running programs
Empty your temporary folder
Check your Internet connection (Internet-based setup)
Then try to run the setup again.
Error code -6001

I've installed the latest version of DOSbox, I've tried installing the games direct from the CD instead of via autorun, I've tried running Install under all the emulations that XP allows, I've tried installing with my internet connection open, and I've now run out of ideas. HELP!!

The traveller, hi,

I googled for that error code, and if it's a Windows system error like I think it is:

ERROR_DECRYPTION_FAILED
6001
0x1771
The specified file could not be decrypted.

Then it might mean the CD is damaged. You'll only need DOSBox if you do manage to get it installed with the Windows installer.

Regards, and Happy Xmas,

Is the disc free from dirt etc? Might be a smudge thats causing it perhaps. Also the games maybe specific to the version of dosbox that is on that dvd i.e some specific tweaks sierra did to it for it to be used with the collection i duno for sure and i doubt it personally but its a possibility.

Which collection is this?
The new one? One of the old ones?

You could have a look at the Help Pages here.

The 6001 error code may refer to a known problem with your InstallShield being corrupted (I'm not being cheeky, but you don't have Kazaa on your system, perchance?).

Here's something to try:

1) Create a System Restore Point (Start - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore).

2) Assuming that Windows is installed on your C: drive, navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime and find the 0701 folder. Delete it.

3) Reboot and try re-installing the game.

4) If that fails re-name but do NOT delete the Installshield folder (to Installshield_old or something similar), and try again.

Usual rules apply - before you do anything at all with anything except programmes you have installed yourself, create a Restore Point.

Let us kow how you get on,

reikidave

I recently purchased Kings Question Collection , 7 complete games, and it runs on WXP just fine. I am so happy that they released a windows edition because I always had a problem with the configuration on my old W95.I hope you get the problem solved because those old games brings back such fond memories. luck

If dosbox is compatible with vista then i would assume so tho you may need a more up to date version of dosbox which you can get via their website as normal.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Tried what I could, but still get the same error. Can't try it on Vista, as I don't have access to that. All other suggestions welcome, but I'm not a techie! Thanks again.

If it's a bad disc problem, you'll have to return the geme to where you got it.

Thank you everyone who replied about King's Quest. I returned the game but they haven't been able to send a new one as it is a limited edition and they have sold them all. Thanks once again for the help.

You can find the first 3 Kings Quest games on this page if you want to play them. They are the re-makes. HERE
Enjoy.
