I'm a die-hard RPG player, but lately I've fallen in love with some shooters, i.e., Call of Cthulhu, Undying, and right now Bioshock. I figure there must be a lot of games in this genre that I'd love. I prefer 1st person games, & I'd like at least a semblance of a plot, not just killing anything that moves, so I'd love any recommendations.

I've been having fun with Advent Rising. It's a sci-fi cross-genre shooter. It not as advanced as some of the ones you mentioned and it's pretty difficult even at the normal level, but the graphics and music are very well done for a gen 1 game. The plot is also quite original. Plus it only sells for about $8.00 at GoGamer.

Hi Barb. I'm so glad you tried Bioshock. I had a great time playing it. Some of my favorite action/adventures:

Deus Ex
Thief 1 & 2
System Shock 2
Splinter Cell, all of them
Mafia
No One Lives Forever
Max Payne
Chronicles of Riddick
Outcast

I know you liked the Gothic games and wonder if you have tried Two Worlds. It reminds me a lot of Gothic with lots of beautiful landscape to explore. I am really enjoying it.

I thought Bioshock was fantastic. The story was really good and those little kids really tugged at my heart strings.

Far Cry and Half Life 2 are two of the all time best FPS ever made. If you want to play some great shooters, you definitely don't want to miss those. The voice acting in Far Cry is a bit cheezy at times, but the beautiful wide open out-door environments are amazing. Both games have a good story-line. They are not arcade style shooters.

Thanks Trail Mystic, Pokey, & Robert. I'll check out all those games. Pokey, I decided to try Bioshock because of your recommendation & I'm having a blast! It's really hard, though. You have me interested in Two Worlds, is it an RPG?

What does FPS stand for?

FPS = First Person Shooter yes

Many of these games you can download and play the demo first to see if you like it. smile

FPS means First Person Shooter, Barb.

Two Worlds is an RPG - here is the official site, and if you like, you can search on this board for a lot of threads on the game.

Only thing I can say .. if you want to play the latest FPS, make sure you have the machine that can handle them.

My ultimate fav FPS for now is Team Fortress 2. Nice for quick FPS fun online.
Storywise, Bioshock was awesome and graphic wise, I am still amazed at Crysis. I spend more time looking around than actually playing the game.

I tried the COD4 demo. Graphics look good, fast-paced, but I just don't like the whole trigger style of the serie.
I don't know why COD4 got so many awards over Bioshock.

The best FPS for your bucks would be the Orange Box.
It runs on even the most modest config. and for 50$ you get 5 games.

Barb, are you playing Bioshock on easy? I found it much easier than Call of Cthulhu. Be aware that some of the games suggested are hard. I thought Far Cry was the hardest game I ever played, though I liked it a lot.

You would like Two Worlds. I am finding it very easy at half way through.

I agree with The Orange Box recommendation. A great value with several great games.

If you played the Crysis demo, then Bioshock should be ok. No ?

I finished Bioshock on hardest setting and it was quite a challenge, especially fighting the first BigDaddy with just a shotgun and one plasmid. A very fun, enthralling experience and story. End scene makes it look like there will be a second one.

The min system requirements for Bioshock are higher than for Crysis, and the Bioshock demo would not play on mine. duh

I'm sure I'll leave something out, but I second that emotion on:

Deus Ex
System Shock 2
Half-life 2
Doom 3
Painkiller

And not mentioned yet, but should be:

No One Lives Forever 2
Dead Man's Hand
Red Faction 2

I wanna add, on behalf of these games, that there are trainers or other cheats for them, if you need 'em. If there weren't, I never could've made it through them. Happy shooting! smile

My system can handle anything out there. I'm playing Bioshock on easy, Pokey, but it's still pretty difficult. I think it's harder than CoC. (except for the part in Cthulhu you had to rescue me on!) smile I'm still in the first part of the game - taking the pictures of the spider splicers. I love hacking the different machines, but some of them are too quick for me to get.

Thanks again for all the suggestions from everyone. I think I'll be playing Bioshock for quite a while, but I'm sure I'll find something great to play when I finish it!

I have to agree with Joe's suggestion of Prey and FEAR. Far Cry is a great game also.

I second Painkiller. Great atmosphere, nice monsters, cool environments, cool weapons; have to finish it some day...
Tried to play Undying as well but I was too freaked out by the game - it's well done, mind you, but it had my adrenaline rushing through my veins at a speed that can't be healthy at all smile This is, I think, the only game that freaked me out after two minutes of playing. I only bought it because amazon had advertised it as an adventure which it clearly is not smile

I fully endorse the recommendation for the Orange Box (including HalfLife2), but the original Half Life (and related titles) is also worth a look although the graphics are now a little dated.

I put those games in a league of their own with Farcry, Prey and several others being entertaining but not level-pegging.

The Orange Box also includes Portal which is a whole other experience...

Have fun killing them critters!

I finished Bioshock! Yay! I thoroughly enjoyed it, & I hope I can find other shooters that are as good. I bought Prey and FEAR, but one thing I don't like about them is that there's no map. I get confused enough as it is without having no idea where I am! I loved the map in Bioshock. Lex, what do you mean level-pegging?

The Orange Box has been mentioned several times - I assume it's a collection of FPS games, right? I will have to do some research on that.

Hi Barb,

I simply mean that the HalfLife games are (in my not so humble opinion!) streets ahead of just about any of the other FPS games, however good some of those others may be. For me that is because there is quite a lot of thinking to be done, rather than just shooting and a great sense of humour.

The HalfLife series was expected to continue with HalfLife2 episode 2, but instead we have the Orange Box which contains not only the expected episode 2 but also the 2 previous episodes, a wonderful separate fairly short game called Portal and an updated online game Team Fortress. All in all a great gaming experience and good value for money (especially for those who did not already have the 2 earlier HalfLife episodes).

Barb, glad to hear you enjoyed Bioshock. I have been playing Hitman Blood Money and was thinking that you would enjoy it. It does have a map and you can complete the missions without using a weapon other than a wire. There are many ways to complete the objectives and some are quite amusing. Creating "accidents" is another way of getting things done.

Max Payne was pretty good if you like noir. Definitley FEAR and the Half Life Orange Box (great value), and Crysis if your system can manage it. The Call of Duty games were pretty good too.
