Lost crown is excellent so far but not an edge of seat kind of scary like the others.
Dark Fall The Journal

Phantasmagoria is pretty spooky but the game is old and only available via ebay. Second the choice of Scratches; I think that's the scariest game I've played up to date. The Awakened is a great game as well, as far as I can tell - am in the midst of playing it smile

SHIVERS - but as it is an older game I don't know if it will play on XP or Vista - check that out with Inferno.

Shivers will play on XP. Great game.

Deleware St. John series is good too. Haven't played the 3rd one yet.

For me, the scariest so far has been Lost Crown. I'm sure the black and white has something to do with it. The old black and white mystery thriller movies, with shadows, innuendues and gloominesss were far superior for tingling the spine than full color. Certainly the lack of color provides a good backdrop for evil. Teddo

Hi ya all,

I'm new here. Just finished The Lost Crown. A real ADVENTURE!(loved the cats). Amazing what this Boakes fellow can do with atmosphere. I thought Darkfall II was excellent as well.
Scariest game, though, for me is still The Darkness Within; even when played in the daytime it gave me the shivers sometimes.
Been playing adventures since 1984, so I'm a real veteran you could say, and glad that the genre is still alive and kicking today.

welcome mousecats. Pleased to meet you.

I thought inferno named every scary game I know, but then I noticed Sanitarium was missing. I thought that game was really creepy with the mutant children, the pumpkin patch, the cyborg insect/Cyclops creatures and all those dead Aztec warriors. scared

I didn't find Jack the Ripper very scary either - although that crow made me jump a couple of times - but I do love it. It's chilling and sad, with a real tension as you progress towards the end of the game.

welcome to GameBoomers, btw, mousecats! wave

I have to go along with Jehane... Phantasmagoria. I still remember being so creeped out in the house that I'd 'drive' across the bridge over to the little town square & try to talk to some of the shopkeepers just to get off that property.

Game-wise, I think it still holds up to many of today's scary games. Unfortunately, according to our own Infernoj13usa, Phantasmagoria...

@Phantasmagoria: There's an installer that copies all files from the seven cds to the harddrive, afterwards, you can run the game without having to insert or change the cds. It worked fine for me, except that after I installed some other programme, Phantasmagoria wouldn't work any longer. I don't know why; something got messed up there. But basically speaking, the installer works just fine, even though it's only been tested with the German version of the game. I own the English version and had no problems starting the game at first, played through almost all of the first chapter smile I still haven't found out what caused the problems afterwards; I don't think it's the installer, must be something else that's messing up things smile
On another board, I also found a hint that disabling the system check will allow you to install the game; here's the link: http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/5268/t195881-phantasmagoria-in-windows-xp/
