I had the same problem and I'm trying to think how I solved it. I'm pretty sure I went back to a saved game -- even though the game sends you back to the start of the chase every time you fail, I wasn't ever able to get there that way. When I started from a previous save, though, and did the sequence quickly, I got it on the first try.
I hope you get it -- the ending IS a surprise.
