Does anyone know if there have been reissues of older PC games so that they play on Windows XP? It seems that I have come across some games on eBay and other places that claim they will function in Win XP. The original game was released to play in DOS or Win 98. Are these reissues or just someone's opinion?

I was wondering if there is a movement to bring out some of these older games with updates for the modern computers. Any information would be of interest and appreciated.

Oldfeeble -- this does occasionally happen (The Longest Journey was updated for Win XP, for instance). But it's not very common, from what I've seen. You might want to post this in the Glitches forum, where the tech experts hang out.

There are updated versions of some Lucas Arts games to make them playable on WinXP. So far, there are updated versions of Curse of Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, Sam & Max: Hit the Road and Full Throttle. I don't know if there are English versions of these games; I own the German versions (except for Full Throttle, haven't bought that one yet). They play nicely, although Grim Fandango needs to be patched or it will freeze up. Sam & Max doesn't require installation at all and also plays smoothly smile

Jehane -- where have you seen an updated version of Grim Fandango? (I'm curious because I've been looking for one, and even bought what I thought was an updated version of Grim that turned out not to be. :()

Becky, it's this one:
http://www.amazon.de/NBG-EDV-Handels-Ver...7689&sr=1-1

I bought it in a local shop in Salzburg; it says on the back of the box that it works with WinXP, and it does. I just haven't gotten around to playing it or rather: completing it because the controls were giving me a real hard time and I didn't even make it through the first chapter smile

In the same series, there have been reissues of MI3, Full Throttle and Sam & Max. According to Amazon UK, there are also English versions of these reissues, titled "Lucas Classic Line". Even though it says on Amazon UK that the required system is Windows 95 or 98, I'm pretty sure it's the same version I got - the box looks exactly the same, and the release date says December 2006 which sounds about right - the German versions were released last year smile

Jehane -- this is the version that I bought. You'll see that under the system requirements it lists WinXP.

I bought it for a friend, who attempted to get it to run and couldn't. (Okay, and I was VERY curious to see why GoGamer said that the publisher was Sierra -- turns out this is just a misprint on GoGamer's part.) He tried so hard to tweak things to get it to run that he ended up with some serious technical problems afterwards. frown

EDIT: Amazon US has what looks like the Classic version here. But it doesn't list Win XP. Confusing, isn't it?

Hi smile

Both the first two Broken Sword games AND the first two Simon the Sorcerer games have XP versions out - I own them and can say they run perfectly in XP thumbsup

I don't know where they can be bought from though - I got mine quite some time ago.

Cheers.

Thanks for the information everyone! Wouldn't it be great if some company could get the rights to reissue our favorite classic games in updated format so that they would run flawlessly on Windows XP?

And then we could finish up this issue of World Peace in our spare time too..........

I bought Broken Sword 1 and 2 for XP from www.play.com here in the UK. I just had a quick look and it is still listed for £4.99 including delivery in the UK. Great games and excellent value! wave

Hi,
Dave at IntercactCD Store, see link at the top of Gameboomers has Broken Sword I&II, duo pack and they play on XP. I think he has them for 14.95us. I like them and no fuss to install.

Most of the older DOS games can now be run on Windows XP in DOSBox, so sometimes that is what sellers mean on eBay when they say that the game can work with XP.

Bad Mojo was also rereleased and updated a few years ago and runs on Windows XP. wave

Along the same lines as what Marian is saying, Infernoj13usa (BAAGS specialist & GB Moderator) has compiled a list of oldies that you might be able to play on XP. Very helpful! HERE'S a link to the site.

re: update- I'd forgotten that Inferno's list was also right here ('though I like all the color and decor on her angelfire page grin).

Gobobby,
Thanks so much for that link, I did not find SamnMax but I did come across what I think was the first Tex Murphy game, Mean Streets and I plan to buy it.

I know that a lot of the old Sierra games have been re-released to work in XP (thru DOSBOX) for instance.... all the King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry and Police Quest games. I don't know about Torin's passage....that will probably work in DOSBOX tho

Hi Becky, that is identical to the version of Grim Fandango that I have - in the specs requirements it is only windows 95/98 Direct X compatible but I had no problems playing it on Win XP a few years ago! smile

Chrissie -- yours came in a box? And has the word "Classic" at the bottom front of the box?

Hi Becky, it's a CD -Rom in a 'DVD' box & has Classic at the bottom front of the box. The box I have is identical front & back to the one in your link (large pic top left)- I bought the game new quite a few years ago from a local games store. It worked on my previous WinXP system no problem - I don't mind trying to install & play a little on my present one to see if it works if it helps - tomorrow though as I'm off to bed!! smile

Chrissie -- I'd be interested in knowing if it runs on your other WinXP system. I wonder if there's a difference between the UK Classic version and the US Classic version. Does yours include Win XP in the system requirements?
