I'm now at chapter 11.

I discovered that the game's characters get involved in quite a fair bit of mischief. This game certainly ranks at the top among adventure games for mischief. Look at what Jack did to Shari in Chapter 10 and those bollywood homages; the "roaring" Sacred Tiger; Amanda fooling around with the portraits; Jack's birthday suit sequence etc. They should make more of such games. Perhaps a remake of Kyrandia 3: Malcolm's Revenge?

Easter egg:
After Mrs Gristle loses her temper at the portrait gallery, listen completely to the lengthy talk between the doctor and Mrs Gristle. There's quite a bit of backstory in this conversation, delivered with great humour.

I have finished the game. I'd just like to comment on a few things in light of a discussion thread on cultural shift of gamers.

I noticed that the game had a large number of inventory puzzles. Even in the heat of events like defusing a bomb and a gun battle the hero can still leisurely stroll about as the gamer hunts for hotspots to jump on or to remove loose wires.
Click to reveal..
Towards the end we all know that the doctor just needs to press a button to signal the ships to drop bombs to annilate the fleet. Yet the hero had leisurely pace to deal with inventory puzzles. Also, the people on the island didnt seem the least been pressured that a mastermined is using their island as a base for world domination. It struck me as a bit odd as the tone and tension of the game is affected by such designs. In fact the tone of the game is rather uneven and switches between some seriousness such as death of Jack's parents and total wackinesss. Dear friends, do you think the story should be compromised for the sake of adding more puzzles into the game?

Next, I know that many gamers here do not favour action sequences or timed events. Yet in parts the game seemed that it would benefit from a little bit of such. I feel the need to beat up some of the characters like Montgomery or doctor but there was no avenue to do so. In action games like platformers such opportunities are aplenty. Perhaps this game should be made into an action adventure game instead of pure inventory puzzle game?

Benedict -- I'm adding a spoiler tag to part of your post, just in case someone who hasn't played the game yet (and doesn't want to read this much detail) happens by. thumbsup

I was really glad there were no timed puzzles, it meant I could enjoy the game & do puzzles by myself rather than rely on a walkthrough

I agree with you that switching between serious subjects and wackiness wasn't handled well. If you're playing the game for the wackiness, do you want to see things as serious as the main character's parents being killed?

Or maybe you're playing the wrong genre. Adventure games aren't generally about beating up other characters with your fists, though you may be able to take your revenge in more devious ways.

I'm glad to hear there aren't any timed sequences. I'm having a hard enough time getting myself to finish this game as it is. I just find it boring and not really funny. I did enjoy Ankh 2, from the same company that made Jack Keane, but Jack Keane just isn't doing it for me.

Jenny,

Precisely, perhaps the reason why Jack Keane doesn't satisfy both of us is that the subject material is more appropriate for another genre. They either put in more humour and take the edge off or put in the edge and more action and take the puzzles off. As they are now, the elements just don't add up.

They don't for me, but some gamers seem to have enjoyed the game just as it is. I think the problem for me wasn't the genre as much as that I didn't care about any of the characters or what happened to them. I had the same problem with Runaway 2, where I found the Brian character distinctly unlikeable.

The game had all the right elements for me if you dissect it, but when you put it together it was missing something. I still can't place what was wrong but I thought it would never end and I wanted it to. lol

I have a question about it, does it have Action?? at all?
I have been considering getting it, maybe I will trade the lost Crown with some one in the trade forum for it...
I really like puzzles, one of the top items for me......but HATE ACTION ...or any arcade type stuff... even if its relatively easy.
Thanks,
Marcia

I really liked this game, although it certainly wasn't perfect. For me the only real problem was that it was rather buggy.

Marcia, there are no action sequences or timed events of any sort. This is a pure inventory-puzzle-based, point-and-click adventure game. The puzzles are of the usual Use-X-On-Y variety.

The game also seems to revel in largely nonsensical inventory puzzles. There were a couple of instances in which I ended up combining a few seemingly random inventory items together merely because I didn't have anything better to do. It felt a bit like the designers were trying to satire adventure-gaming conventions, but forgot somewhere along the line that their "joke" puzzles weren't supposed to be part of the actual game.

I enjoyed the game, though. I liked most of the characters, had fun with the silly plot, and (most of all) was really glad that, unlike both Ankh games, there was more to look at in each new scene other than MORE SAND.

Take my word for it...You will love this game...

I just wish people wouldn't judge a game because its buggy for them which has nothing to do with the game....

Glad to hear it isn't just me - I can't figure out yet why this game is such a chore for me to finish, since it seems to be a good game. I get the feeling I won't ever finish though, because it never seems to end.

I finished Jack Keane last night. The pace started picking up about 2/3 of the way through, at the "naked" sequence. I even started enjoying it at that point -- maybe because that was the first time the game made me laugh. Anyway, after that point, you weren't stuck in the village doing fetch quests anymore. I just wish the pace hadn't been so slow for the first 2/3 of the game.

I thought Jack Keane was a pretty good game over all. I'd also have to agree that it would pick up it's pace towards the end Jenny, but for some reason, I sometimes found that the person that voice-acted for Jack wasn't so good on the punch lines to jokes and didn't do so well on his sarcasm. He didn't have that extreme wittiness...well the type of extreme wittiness/silliness Guybrush had I guess because how everyone compared this game to the monkey island series, I was looking for Guybrush in Jack more than anything. I just felt like sometimes when he tried to tell a joke... I could have sworn I heard crickets and a baby crying somewhere in the distance. lol But overall it was a good game, I liked it.

Hi smile

I really enjoyed Jack Keane. Thought it was a very good all round traditional style adventure bravo

Comparing games to the Monkey Islands though ??

I haven't found one yet that has the same quality of wit and humour that Ron Gilbert injected into his work ....

Cheers.

I am currently playing the game too. I really like the game, and am enjoying playing it. It is alot like Monkey Island or Grim Fandango in the way it is played. But it just isn't as witty as those two classic games. But it is nice to have a new game that is played like that again. bravo

I am enjoying this one even tho I click (talk, walk, or whatever) and then have to wait and wait and wait for the scene to change or the action to actually take place and wait some more. But what fun! I am surprised no one else has commented that ND is playing undercover as Amanda (tongue in cheek) Listen carefully to Amanda's voice, it is Nancy Drew! I LOVE IT!

I am playing this game too, and enjoying it. It's a lot of fun and thank goodness for no action sequences. I like to take my time exploring. My only beef is the time it takes to load originally and between each chapter. Maybe it's because I am using Vista. I do not like games that keep accessing the disc, it slows them down.
