Bad news I am not able to play it on my vista 32. It looked like it would install and than asked for old version of direct x 6 or later and than asked again for Direct X 3 or later.

Gosh I have direct X 10 as well as Direct X 9 why would it not let me play the game? It just bumps me back to my desktop.

There's a patch for this game for Windows XP. The link is on this page:

LINK FOR WINDOWS XP PATCH

I have no idea if this game will run on Windows Vista, but you could download the patch above and then try to run the game in Windows XP compatibility mode--this may well work!

Maybe someone else will have another suggestion, too, who has tried to run the game on Vista. wave

The patch should work in Vista.

The version of DirectX that comes with Pandora's Box is probably for Windows 95/98 only.

Does this mean Jenny I can't play it on Vista?

Jenny100 just meant that you don't need to try to install the older version of DirectX.

It means you shouldn't try to install such an old version of DirectX on Vista because that version of DirectX wasn't made to work on Vista (or even XP).

Hopefully the patch will fix the problem so the game will work with the DirectX you have on your Vista.

Jenny, is it possible to override newer DirectX files through trying to install an older DirectX? I was kind of under the impression that this couldn't happen, thinking that files don't get replaced unless DirectX sees that they are newer. I've never come close to trying such a thing, but this would make me extra careful, for sure.

It's not supposed to happen, but I've heard of really old versions of DirectX overwriting newer ones. If that happens with Win 95/98, you just reinstall the new version. But with Vista... It's probably not a good idea to try to install any version of DirectX that was meant only for Win 95 on a Vista computer. Vista does allow you to install DirectX 9.0c even though it comes with DirectX 10 because DirectX 10 is significantly different from 9.0c and some games require DirectX 9.0c components. I don't know what Vista would do if you attempted to install something like DirectX 3, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Oh dear that is what I tried to do is install the old version over the new version of Direct X. slapforehead

I don't think it worked though because my other games are not messed up. I think I will leave well enough alone. They insist that I need to put the direct X version much older and send us links to microsoft to get them. Thank you for your warning and advice.

Can't you just use the patch and do nothing with DirectX? I believe it will then play on your computer (you might have to use compatibility mode for XP).

I can only remember one game out of hundreds that installed its particular flavor of DirectX without my permission, and I have never had a game that wouldn't let me install it if I said no to installing DirectX.

Thanks for replying Marian, but until someone posts with Vista that has gotton this game to work, I am going to pass on the game. I am not a computer whiz and don't want to mess up my computer.

I understand. For what it's worth, I just did a search and came up with this:

MICROSOFT PLUS WINDOWS VISTA/PANDORA'S BOX

If you read the article, it says this package includes a trial version of Pandora's Box. Now, whether this is a new souped-up version so that it would run on your OS, I don't know. But there is proof that it is possible.
