It's time to try out the "Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches" experience!

Quote:
Got Game Entertainment today released 2 demos for "Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches" (PC). The demos showcase 2 chapters from this point and click adventure game based on ancient Welsh myth and folklore.

Click here for the official website and then click on the "Play Demo" link in the central part of the screen -- this will bring up links to the downloads for the two new demos.

ABOUT "RHIANNON: CURSE OF THE FOUR BRANCHES"

Quote:
Legends, myths, and magic spill into reality as an ancient battle for revenge envelopes a remote Welsh farmstead, threatening the very sanity of a lonely teenage girl.

Are reports of unexplained noises and strange visions by fifteen year old Rhiannon Sullivan merely the figments of an overactive imagination? Or does the history of her family’s new home, Ty Pryderi, hold a terrible connection to a timeless struggle between man and magic? Her parents take Rhiannon away, leaving Ty Pryderi to your watch and exploration, but their absence can only postpone an ancient inevitability of revenge and death…Unless you can stop it!

Nice. I especially like the little cubby hole w/ the piano in the first demo. I would LOVE to have a little area like that in my house, except with a desk and about a million books and video games. SIGH....:)

Demos are great, looking forward to trying the full game.

Ahhh, great some demos! Cannot believe I live in Wales and I have to order the game from the US!! I have ordered from Dave at Interact so as dragonuk44 says it should be here soon.

EDIT - Just played the demos through - looks excellent and they have whetted my appetite for the full game. Was it my imagination or are the graphics limited to 1024x768 resolution? Seems odd that this resolution is still used these days when most people have LCD monitors that typically run on a 1280x1024 native resolution at the very least. Does the full game have more resolution options ?

Hi Mark,

Couple of things.

First, Lighthouse will be launching 'Rhiannon' in the UK on 24th October 2008, so if you don't want to pay the postage, you could always hang on a few weeks, save a few bob.

As to the resolution - you're right of course, it's 1024 x 768. It's also true that those players who could afford a new PC in the past few years will be capable of higher.

You have no idea how we agonised over this (and still are for our next game). In the end, we needed a basis of decision and it came down to this - we made 'Rhiannon' for it to be played - first principle. 'Rhiannon' will sell all over the world, into a broad installed estate and including economies where even offboard graphics accelerators are not commonplace and CRT still rules. Therefore, making sure that it can be played by anybody who wants to play it takes precedence. So for starters, we plumped for 1024 x 768 for the sake of the players as a whole.

Then of course we had to ask if that's technologically enough. We noticed that other adventure designers, bigger names than Arberth, had arrived at the same conclusion in the same launch year. So we would be in effect at the state-of-the-art for this genre.

For the next game it gets even more complicated. Widescreen? 5.1? Mind you, if that's the worst of our problems, we're not complaining. Thanks for the feedback. I'm still watching this issue.

Cheers

I'm playing the full game right now and appreciating every minute of it. It's obvious to me that a lot of thought and care went into this game, and the backdrop of The Mabinogion is very interesting indeed. I'm also quite thrilled to be able to vicariously experience being in Wales (I've been to England twice; if I ever go to the British Isles again, I very much want to go to Wales). smile

I'm still in chapter one and at this point I have way more questions pertaining to the storyline than I have answers, and I am eagerly awaiting what comes next. wave thumbsup

Thanks Marian, we're hoping that a strong story is key to a good adventure and the attention to detail makes Rhiannon work!

Hi all,
I Don't know anything about the demos, but I just finished the game and I have to say it is one of the funnest adventure games that I have played in a very long time. Great plot with mostly logical puzzles that are well-integrated into the story. Some quirky and eery moments also. You also get to make a lot of cool things work again. The best part, though, was the visual and musical "rewards" given for task completion...Very clever; very pretty game. thumbsup thumbsup thumbsup

Hi Noel

Thanks for the detailed explanation of the thought process behind selecting a 1024x768 resolution for this game.

Would it be possible in future games for there to be a choice of resolutions in the video settings menu so that the player base has more chance to see and play the game at its full graphic potential ? For anyone with an LCD that has a higher native resolution than 1024x768 the graphics are scaled up and stretched which makes them quite blurry and pixellated.

Mark

My LCD screen is set at 1280x1024 and the Demo#1 was perfect.

MBV have you looked in your computer settings lately? You can change them you know.

Are there any sound puzzles in this game?

I ask because I am tone deaf.

Here is a review of Rhiannon just posted on Adventure Classic Gaming:

http://www.adventureclassicgaming.com/index.php/site/reviews/409/

It scored a 4 of 5. The graphics from the screenshot look a bit staled though.

On the question of whether there are sound puzzles in 'Rhiannon' - there are two puzzles that may appear to be sound puzzles, but only if one assumes them to be. You don't need musical ability to solve them.

As the clue in Jen's treatment room says, "The Symbol's the Thing".

Thanks noelbruton, I would only be worried about the ones that need a "good ear", I'll order it today then.
