Becky: I can´t say it as a general rule, as this is the first game me and my team finished so far, but from what I know, then it is often so. Especially when you go for the professional voiceovers recorded in the proffesional studio( such as voiceovers in other games from Future Games). I think it is far more expensive then eg. czech or russian ones. Probably it has something to do with the power of economy of the country you are from.

For the picture- I was told the estimated costs of the english ToH voiceovers recorded in US and that amount would be really significant in comparison to the budget with which the whole game was developed (rather small budget, but still). I can´t say exactly how much, due to NDA, but for comparison- english voceovers would cost about 4 times more then czech voiceovers, which are not to be recorded in the low-cost category here in czech.

I think this is one of the reason (apart audience expectations and willingness to bother with reading or listnening dialogues)why many games have fewer and fewer text and dialogues- we got limit how much spoken words can be in the whole game (it was hell to me as I love to write dialogues lol )

I see some ways around, eg. using amateur actors. They do not cost that much and they do it out of love for the cause. Quality may vary but as it seems, voiceovers are under criticism in most of the cases of the games from non-english speaking countries and therefore, theoreticaly, it woul´d matter that much. Only would cost less. But this is only my personal opinion which had not met with much of understanding before lol

In short- I don´t know whether english, respective US voiceovers (british english is considered to be handycap on US market) are generaly much more expensive than other languages like german, spanish ect. I do know, that it is pretty expensive for us frown

I have a question for you tol. When I did play the demo I got a strong feeling of deja vu, was a demo of this game published earlier? I've played a lot of games and I can't quite recall, but it all looked so familiar.

and just for the record, it's not only about actors, but also studio time is much much more expensive. Just for comparison, if I am recording music in the quality studio here I pay around 10 times less for an hour than I'd pay in a good studio in Vienna, which's just 120km from here. smile

Recording voiceovers is also about having studio and sound technicians who would record and cut it. You can save significant amount if you record it yourself. lol

Hi Bernard,

This thread with demo was opened month ago, then went out from first page and now discussion started again (to my great pleasure as I really enjoy to discuss here) smile

I wasn't speaking of months ago, I was thinking about 2 or 3 years back! It's also possible that my mind is playing tricks though. smile

Well, then it reminds you some other game then smile

Nevertheless there was one demo of Tale of Hero about year and something before for business partners and game publicists but it did not leaked public as far I know.
Based on that demo was published preview on Adventure-archiv with some outdated and unfinished screenshots (which scared me for they should never leave the office), but it covered game pretty well smile

It is here:

Oooo I wanna be a voice actor!!!! I still think this is something The Adventure Company would publish, it's their style of games.

I have been told that they are not interested in this game unfortunately. Fantasy fairy tale genre seems to be not very popular these days but I am still hoping smile

As far I know unfortunatelly not. There are english voiceovers recorded though and will be used in all language versions except czech and russian (which is on market few months already and got several rather good reviews by the way). There is italian and polish versions already announced (english voiceovers with italian or polish subtitles).

Thank you for your interest! smile

Wonder if Deep Silver would publish this. They're usually game to take new games on.

I spoke to the italian publishers, Adventure Productions, and they confirmed that Tale of Hero will be released in Italy Q1, and it will be english spoken with italian subtitles.
I'm trying to convince them to make an option for english subtitles too (or at least to switch off the italian subtitles) and they told me that they will see if they can do it, no promises.
Unfortunately they can't ship outside Italy, but don't forget that I still have my friends and family in Italy... whistle whistle whistle

Any chance that Adventures Planet will have it available to international customers as a download, I wonder?

The game is quite huge though so a download size could turn some people off. smile But the way I see it, Carla's family will soon have to open reseller's center. rotfl

Well i wouldnt mind the game being 10 gig or more it would only take a day to download or somit. More than likly it would be about 1 gig to 3 gig ish. Which is easy enough to dl if it were to become a direct to download type of game. I wonder if the developers have thought about Steam?

SkeeterUK:Developers thought about many things how to sell this game, unfortunately developers are not in control, Future Games are.

Anyway game is under 2 gigs, which is not problem for some people, but still it is rather huge download.

Carla:
Switching off the subtitles is the standard function in our game, so you can turn them off and listen just to english voiceovers. Another matter are texts in books, letters ect., which will be still in italian (and are not recorded, they are just for reading). Also interface like menu, options ect. will be fully localised.
Bilingual subtitles are something we thought before and wanted to do them, but were not permited to do so.

well

I have been waiting for this game for what seems like

"aeons" smile

But I will be getting a copy next week ... in Milan game show.

Unless hands are tied regarding intra-territorial shipments - I will see what Carlo/AP has to say...

Since we won't have Ron Loo - this is the very next best thing to me. So with so many people trying to get this great game available to gamers everywhere - well has to be a way(s) for everyone who is also waiting to get Tale of a Hero, fairly soon smile

I've just posted my review of Tale of a Hero. In short, it's the best adventure game of 2008 for me.

Unfortunatelly that is not up to our team- game was finished at Christmas 2007 and marketing is entirely out of our hands.

Game will be soon available in italian version, spanish is, if I am not mistaken, already on market. All of these versions have english voiceovers so maybe it is playable for some of you this way smile

Thank you for your interest, hopefully you´ll enjoy our game once you can get it somewhere smile
