The thread ***here*** got me wondering...

What are some older logic puzzle-oriented games? -- "older" meaning for Windows 95, 98, or DOS.

I'm asking about games other than the Myst series, the RHEM series, and other games mentioned in the abovementioned thread, which focusses on more recent games...

...so in general this means games from year 2000 and earlier (though I include Schizm because it was made for Windows 98 and I couldn't get it working on a newer system without audio problems)

Here a few games I can think of:
(dates are from Mobygames)

Shivers 1 (1995)
Shivers 2 (1997)
7th Guest (1993 for DOS version and 1997 for Win 95 version)
11th Hour (1995)
Obsidian (1997)
Schizm (2001)
Reah (1999)
Safecracker (the first one from 1997)
Timelapse (1996)

The ones below are more puzzle games than adventures because of their very small game world -- small rooms, each with a puzzle, off of a single main room.

Jewels of the Oracle (1995)
Jewels 2 (aka Gems of Darkness) (1998)
Quest for Karma (aka Karma: Curse of the 12 Caves) (1995)

Pandora's Box (1999) (even more of a "pure puzzle" game than the Jewels games)

and some DOS games
Castle of Dr. Brain (1991)
Island of Dr. Brain (1992)
the later Dr. Brain games had too much timed stuff so I won't mention them

***the Cliff Johnson games***
The Fool's Errand (1989)
3 in Three (1989)
At the Carnival (1990)

I'm not sure if the following games qualify as "logical," since I haven't played any of them recently and can't really remember.
Wrath of the Gods (1994)
Entombed (1997)
Comer (1998)

Depending on how strictly you define logic puzzle-oriented, the following may (or may not) fit in:
Atlantis 2 and 3
Beyond time
Clandestiny
Lighthouse
The Neverhood
Physicus
Riddle of the Sphinx

The Bass is the basis

This is the exact sort of thread I was looking for, since this style of adventure game is certainly my favorite type. Most of these on the lists are either my favorite adventure games or ones I'm hoping to play the most. Except for a few which I'll check out later.

Anyways, The Crystal Key is the main one I can think of that I haven't seen listed here yet that's considered older, though it is slightly more inventory focused than many of these.

Oh, I've got some good ones!
Chaos, a Fantasy Adventure
Entombed Enhanced (one of the best mazes ever)
Cassandra Galleries
Connections
Comer
Drowned God
Labrynth of Time
Bioscopia
Chemicus
Safecracker 2006
Secret of the Luxor
Rama
Elemental (more of a casual game)

Ones I haven't played, but I think fit the bill:
Milo
Alice, an Interactive Museum
L-zone
Lost in Time
Lunar Deep
Martian Chronicles

I'd recommend:
7th Guest (first bought and played it around 94/95 and remember having to phone my father and explain over the phone what the puzzle was about and if he could help solve it. Managed to get it to run on Windows XP many many years later after a fair bit of work).
11th Hour: not as good as 7th Guest but still fun to play.
Riddle of the Sphinx - I think that was the one with the npc of Hump who amused Hubby and I masses.

I've been using Windows Vista since about a year and I doubt any of these would run on Vista but there are virtual PC programs available that allow you to install another o/s such as XP or 98, or failing that a dual boot.

Sometimes, maybe, the older games are just as much fun as the newer games despite the advance in graphics etc in the last few years. And you can't beat nostalgia.

Boy, this thread has brought back a lot of wonderful memories of games from years gone by. Is it just me, or did those games seem to be a lot more enjoyable than some of the more elaborate and technically advanced games of today?

I still enjoy loading up a new game and getting into the adventure, but I have to admit, the older ones seemed to amaze and intrigue me a lot more. Maybe it's because gaming was a brand new experience for me back then, and now we take all this technology for granted.

I think the test is whether you can replay the old ones and still get engrossed with them (possibly after a bit of time to acclimate yourself to the older graphics).

Does "Black Dahlia" count for you as a puzzle game? Are you after games which are not dominated by inventory based puzzles?

Mostly games where you have little or no contact with other characters... and where the emphasis is on puzzles solved by logic rather than talking with other characters or using inventory to advance in the game. In Black Dahlia, a good bit of your time is taken up by conversations and with searching for and using inventory.

OK understood. So "Celtica" fits? Rama?

Used to answer to "Peter Smith", now answers to "Peter Rootham-Smith"

Rama fits, and was mentioned by Colpet.
I guess Celtica would too, though I don't remember it very well.

Not every first person solitary game would qualify as logical though. For example, I wouldn't say Liath was logical.

I loved Shivers and Dr. Brain.

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

I loved 7th Guest and Shivers I. Maybe it's part of the "good old days," but I had fun with the puzzles and the graphics were good for that time period. I would still be playing Shivers, but VISTA is not my friend in this. *G*
