I had graphics problems with this game (characters blacked out, silouhettes). This is in a quad core system. Well I hung on to the game long enough to find a solution that you all may know about already. You edit the system startup so it reads only one core. Its very simple and it finally worked for me...

Have played this game for a little while, and now theres an in-game freeze in istanbul at the palace. the guard goes down to get more tea, tells the dog to stay and thats where it freezes. Installed game patch and made other adjustments with no luck. With all the problems I've had with newer games these days, actually for the past year or so, I think I'm done adventuring or gaming in general for some time. Its to bad, its something I use to look forward too.

Are you having these kinds of problems in other games too?
If this is the only point in the game where you have problems, the Hints forum might be able to provide you with a saved game.

This almost sounds as if you're disabling the additional cores for all processes on the PC (which is probably not the best approach).

There is a free tool (authored by Microsoft) that can permanently modify the game so that it only uses 1 core (without disabling them for other programs).

Metzo has a fairly good write-up on it below:

I had to do the same thing as Bert, but this is good to know for future reference.

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars
after spending two nightmare days getting this game to load, playing for an hour, saving only to have my pc freeze. black screen, i had to go to task manager to get out. i lost everything - twice. this is very frustrating. i played B.S. 3 and really liked it so i was really looking forward to playing all the B.S. games. But what a nightmare. it seems like a good game. a little dated. i still want to play and i would love to get a solution if at all possible.

Have you tried playing in compatibility mode? Sometimes that's all I need to do when having similar problems in a game.

Please do not put requests for help about Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars (a game from 1996 meant to be played on DOS or Windows 95) in a help thread for Broken Sword 4 (a game from 2006). The solutions would be completely different.

If you want to play Shadow of the Templars on a modern computer, I suggest using ScummVM.

I had the same problem (dark shadows) on my machine, a Tri-core, and thanks to the wonderful Jenny100, got it temporarily fixed until they get a patch for the game. I hae also contacted the Adventure company, who I had contacted about this issue about the multi-core processors, and gave them the same url that Jenny100 gave to me so that maybe they might be a patch comming soon.

I have just installed Broken Sword 4 and it runs fine on my XP machine. However, it appears very dark. Could this be due to hyperthreading? Or is it supposed to be dark? I'll try out the imagecfg solution to see if that makes a difference. think

Edit: Well I tested out this theory and now the game won't run at all. I'll have to undo what I did. slapforehead I guess I'll have to uninstall and reinstall the game to get rid of the affinity setting.

They have a patch at the Adventure company website that may help. One thing that the book that came with game said was that it does not support on board graphics cards. That could be it, make sure all drivers are updated, that may help, try different settings in the (in game)OPTIONS settings.

Thanks J_Man. I'll try the patch and if that doesn't work I'll tinker with the settings. My video card should be fine as it is an Nvidia 7900 GS with I believe the latest driver. I'll have to double check that. Thanks again! wave

Thanks John. I'm not going to play this game for a while, so I think I'll just set it aside for now. I'm beginning to think the game is naturally dark. Which is annoying, but I don't think there's anything wrong with my computer or the game which is a relief.
