So far have played the game without a walkthrough as it is fairly easy but could not figure out how to cut down the curtain ropes in the Cardinals officeso refered to Marita's wonderful walkthrough. I noticed on the walkthrough that there is supposed to be a package on his desk . It is not there, only the note pad and the pen. I don't think I can continue the game without the package being there because the guard outside the door will not leave then. Is this a glitch in the game perhaps?

There's no package on the Cardinal's desk - the package referred to is the one that Sylvie wrapped up and which should be in your inventory. You need to borrow the pen from the desk to label the package.
