Do you prefer games that are linier, or non-linier?
Linier--Follows a straight story line. Certain actions have to be done before you can get to the next part. The ending will always be the same.
Non-Linier--The story can follow several paths. The player may do different things, or go to different areas. The ending might change, depending on how the gamer plays the game.
I prefer non-linier games. More interesting game play, and better replay value.

Non-linear, but I like the ending the same.

I like semi-linear. I appreciate the games that let you roam around a decent sized area where you can do things out of order, but still need to complete a section before you can move on.

I like both, but I also like games with complex stories, which tend to require more a more linear structure.

Ditto what Becky said. smile Although I think Culpa did an excellent job of simultaneously telling a great story and using nonlinear game play. So it depends on the game, really.

I agree that is hard decision, But I really love the freedom of non linear, different endings depending on the choices I make. However what Ana says is also a fun way like in the game Lost Crown, we couldn't leave an area until we were done, and the designer let us know that fact.

I enjoy non-linear if the game is logical and I know where I need to go and what I'm supposed to be doing in the order that I choose to do it. grin If I'm wandering around like a plum pudding in a trance, then it gets stale quite quickly. Sometimes it's just as much fun to play linearly, there's not quite so much headscratching involved.

I prefer non-linear with most 3rd person dialogue /inventory games. That way you are limited in how much you have to try every item on everyone and everything, as well as repeating endless dialogues.
In solitary exploration games - Dark Fall, Rhem, Myst, etc. - non-linear is what I like, so when you are stumped with something, you can explore and work on puzzles somewhere else.

It really depends on how i feel. Some games i like to be led some i don't it all depends on how well the game tells you. As i don't like it when i have to struggle to find out what to do next in adv games like in ceville i was lost on how to progress to get the disguise to leave town so im using a walkthrough just to help me a bit till i know what im suppose to be doing.

I prefer linear; I like knowing that if I can't move on in the game, I've missed something, so I just go back and retrace my steps.
Non-linear games leave me feeling totally lost, not knowing what, or where, I'm supposed to be doing or going.

The answer is....chocolate! Who cares what the question is.....

I too enjoy the freedom of full exploration and alternative puzzle solutions etc etc - but I also like it if I'm NOT allowed to start a next chapter until I have accomplished all I should in a current one.

Helps to eradicate some of those dreaded "dead ends" lol

I like both, depends on the game, how hard or easy it is. I don't like to get confused headscratch. Like Mad I liked to finish a chapter before continuing. Like reading a book, you read one chapter at a time. happydance

I like both but I'm discovering that I really like nonlinear! I think it's because I love to explore and choose my own path, so to speak. Like in Dark Fall, I'm still guided and have to find certain things before other events take place, but I can revisit rooms and places also.

I definitely choose non-linear. I prefer it if the actions in the game don't dramatically alter the end result though. I think it’s because I like trying to figure out what to do next rather than having it be made too blatantly obvious.

I actually am very interested in the various possible methods for gaining access to locations in games. An example is Riven, which is almost completely non-linear in terms of puzzles since every action needs to be connected but in no specific order except for the end, but is somewhat linear at first in terms of accessing the locations since the starting point is on one end of the chain of islands. Sentinel/Realms of Illusion is interesting because the order that locations become available is linear, but starting with 3 available already allows for more choices for which area to complete next to make more available.
