I would tend to agree with those who measure it by having to tweak and fiddle with the curent OS to get it running.
Which by my own definition means Tex Overseer is old in my family room but not in my study smile

By that definition, some brand new games are older than some 20+ year old games. Some of the new ones can be so fussy about driver versions.

Thats true Jenny.
Took me forever to get Dreamfall going - had to go backwards in drivers!

You're not the only one, and Dreamfall isn't the only game that had that problem.
I think drivers were a lot less complex back in the DOS days -- easier to avoid conflicts with other software and create a stable version.

Hi, Jenny!

I've come to the conclusion that everything was a lot less complex back in the DOS days because all you had to do was insert your 5-1/4" floppy into the drive, and you were good to go laugh !

But you had to worry about things like properly set conventional memory and EMS memory and other settings in autoexec.bat and config.sys. These could be quite a nightmare.

I find configuring autoexec.bat and config.sys to be trivial compared to wrestling with antivirus, Windows permissions, DRM, and driver roulette. Making space in conventional memory was essentially following a recipe. You could experiment with boot disks if you were afraid of "messing up" your computer configuration. The MEMMAKER utility automatically freed up memory and was compatible with most games. And unlike the new stuff, you could back up successful autoexec.bat and config.sys configurations and reuse them with different games that had the same memory requirements. Just boot off your boot floppy, install the game, and go.

I'm with JohnBoy, I consider everything before the year 2000 to be "old." The Longest Journey is "in between," and everything afterward is "new." There is absolutely no logic behind this, but this is what makes sense to me. lol

Old games for me are those that were released 10 to 20 years ago but even so, as I still play and enjoy them, somehow they don't seem that old wink

Lots of members, however, deem games released over the last two or three years to be old, whereas I think of those as still "recent" lol

[Lots of game release dates can be seen HERE]

So when do you consider a game to have become "old" think

Cheers.

Hi, Ascovel and Jenny!

Ascovel, I agree with Jenny. Any problems with configuring autoexec.bat or config.sys files were trivial compared to the hoops we're now required to jump through if we can't get some of the newer (or older) games to run on whatever operating system we have installed on our computers. Who knew that 64K of RAM would eventually be insufficient for our needs lol ?

Jenny, I remember creating an autoexec.bat file on my old PS/2 that would boot up and give me a menu of my applications. If I hit "1", I launched my word processing application; if I hit "2", I launched my spreadsheet application; and, if I hit "3", I launched my email application. If I returned to the DOS prompt, I could install and play my games. Of course, the games were all text adventures, but I have a wonderful imagination. It wasn't until I played "Zork: Grand Inquisitor" that I was finally able to see what that white house looked like smile !
