Hi Maggie...

I think DA: Origins can be played both as point and click and with the keyboard.

On youtube you can see this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdPFwfvCpD4

It is in German, but has English subtitles; it shows the combat and some of the control schemes. It shows point and click combat (from around 1.05-.1.40). You can set tactital conditions, say automatic healing when 25% of max. hitpoints are reached (seen in the video from around 2.32-2.52) The rest of the video is very nice to view, too.

The German tutorial videos are very informative, and very nice to view.

More on Dragon Age's control scheme:

I just found this:

http://s697.photobucket.com/albums/vv333...lSchematics.jpg

from this thread on the Bioware forums:

http://daforums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=693179&forum=135

As you can see here, you can also play it with the keyboard:

http://s697.photobucket.com/albums/vv333...lSchematics.jpg

But it can be played (controlled with the mouse) as well.

Here's a snippet from a recent previw for Dragon Age at mmorpg.com

"On the PC though, I fell in love. Scroll back with the mouse wheel and you not only zoom out a bit, but you eventually snap into a three quarters isometric view that anyone who has played the Diablos, Baldur's Gates or Icewind Dales will instantly recognize.

From this perspective, you can (if you want) toss out the WASD controls and move to party based point and click. Just like the old games, you can draw a box and control all four party members at once. Pausing becomes even more important and useful at this angle, of course, and generally, the people at Bioware said they found that people who want more control and strategy adopt this mode, some others run through exclusive in 3rd person, while a third group switches between the two for specific encounters."
( source: http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm?loadfeature=3481&bhcp=1 )

As you can see, zooming out (on the pc) will make the game snap in the beloved 3/4 isometric view so familiar to us Baldur's Gate fans, and best of all, you can use point and click.

Note though, that in DA: Origins the right mouse button is used to move characters around while the left mouse button is used to control the camera.

Hi Maggie...

Great to hear from you and that you could use the info I gave you smile

Yes, the price might be a bit much...

But rememeber you get a whole new quest centered around The Stone Prisoner (Shale) for free (or rather the price is included in the price for the game)

If you pre-order (across every platform and every edition) you'll get two-three items exclusively (I think?) to those who've pre-ordered the game.

If you buy the Collector's Edition you'll get a cloth map and a metal case and, of course, Shale for free. If you buy the digital Collector's Edition of the game, you'll get Warden's Keep for free. (and maybe if just buy the game digitally?)
Otherwise you'd pay money for it, the word is that in Europe we'd have to pay EUR 6.99 for it.

Shale is, of course, free, but only for those who buy new copies of the game, everyone else needs to pay 15 US dollars (=6.99 EUR?)

This is, of course, just my understanding of the whole thing, so there might be some nuances I haven't quite gotten right or something that's a bit different. It is, as they say, a bit confusing.

Edit:

Bioware will release a character creation tool for Dragon Age: Orgins on October 13th 2009 so that we can create our own character ahead of time. This means that we get to play around a bit with the character creation tool, making our player character for this game just right.

Hi all smile

I just wanted to point you to this review of the game:

http://gameinformer.com/games/dragon_age_origins/b/pc/archive/2009/10/05/review.aspx

I think you can pre-order at amazon.com, play.com or from the EA store (probably only the digital version, though?)

If you pre-order the Collector's Edition, you do get thre exclusive thingies, one of which whill give a plus 3 to all of your abilities at one point in the game.

Either the Feral Wolf Charm or the Memory Band, if you pre-order the regular edition will give you some more learning experience e.g. add 10% or so to the XP earned in DA: Origins.

The voice talent and the gratuitous gore has gotten me interested. I probably won't pre-order, but I will be picking up a copy at my earliest convenience. laugh

Some extra info:

The UK Collector's Edition will came in a plastic box, not metal, and will only have the code for Shale (stone prisoner) and the Blood Armour, the (code for which you can use in both DA: Origins and Mass Effect).

All other Collector's Editions get the metal box,
the cloth map etc. etc. Very strange I find (not exactl true, the East Asian countries get a wooden box for some odd reason?)

Also, on the Bioware forums there is at the moment a very interesting competition; you'll have to draw, paint etc. something Dragon Age related + it must have something to do with Halloween.

And there's a grand prize:

A very neat and extremely rare reviewer's edition. (no discs included, though). However, it is in form of a book, cloth map wrapped around it, Ray and Greg speak to you when you open the book + there is a book in it - with very beautiful images and stories of Ferelden history.
If you have any artistic talent at all, go for it.

/Karsten

That's odd, I wonder what influences them on what material to use?

I think maybe that a wooden box is seen as much more suitable for the climate in East Asia?

Edit:

Here's a thread over at the DA:Origins forums showing the different (and very confusing) ways to get the dlc and pre-order items. link to thread:

http://daforums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=697233&forum=135

As you can see this is very very confusing.

It could well be that pre-ordering this game from either gamestop.com or maybe even pre-order the digital deluxe edition from impulse could be a much more better deal than buying a regular retail version or retial collector's version could be? When you buy the collector's edition digital (i.e. online) you will get Warden's Keep for free; else you would have to pay US dollars 7 for it..

Hey Folks,

I'm actually posting this information from Karsten as the site was giving him a few probelms earlier. Once again, a bunch of great information on the upcoming DA: Origins happydance Thanks Karsten!

In this thread

http://daforums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=696540&forum=135

we get to know that the character creator will be released tomorrow October 13 2009 at 10 AM standard mountain time.

Then there's a flash game Dragon Age: Journeys on its way.

http://daforums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=697539&forum=135

It is a free online flash gamer (one that you play in your broswer). You'll have to sign up for (free) EA account to play, though. I think it will release on Tuesday the 20th of October.

There's this thread which shows the DLC so far:

http://daforums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=697373&forum=135

On the www.giantbomb.com (a gamingwebsite), there is a 20 minute playthrough of DA: Origins where you get to see the inventory system and such stuff.

Also, in this post a developer from Bioware talk about the way the will deliever DLC in the game:

Thanks Trail for posting the info about the game smile

Here's some more:

Ron Burke from Gaming Trend's has hand a hands-on-experience with Dragon Age: Origins. He has written about this in two excellent articles at

http://www.gamingtrend.com/Articles/articles.php?artID=498

(part 1)

and:

http://www.gamingtrend.com/Articles/articles.php?artID=503

(part 2) Mild spoilers in both of the articles, though.

The spoilers in the articles are nothing new to those of us who have been following Dragon Age: Origins for a (very) long time.

He does mention, though, that after 10.5 hours of playing, he only did play 16% of the game...

He mentions that you can both control the characters via point and click on via the wsad-controls on your keyboard.

In the second article, there's a fairly lengthy (but good) description of the Elven Mage origin.

On a side note, if you create a character via the recently released charactor creator you will get an item, that gives you a + 1 to (all) stats in the game. (presumablye you can get +1 to any stat you so desire, but I'm not entirely sure about this).

Nice reward for getting people to use the charactor creator for this game.
