Thanks, Moondancer. I just removed shadows but it doesn't seem to help. I can play only 10 minutes at a time and then have to let it cool down. At this rate I'll be playing for the Guiness Book of Records for longest time on a game. I've played all my games on a laptop and have experienced this over heating with only one other game. I wish I knew what part of the game does this as I can play for hours with other new games without this problem. I used to have a desk top but I was really happy to switch to a laptop as I gained so much desk space etc.

Would an external harddrive dedicated to games preserve my computer?

Hmm, I think you might do well to take this to glitches, since there might be experts there on laptop gaming, which I am not.

I do know about combating overheating in a desktop system, but of course a laptop is quite a different kettle of fish.

Re playing on a fast external dedicated to gaming:
of course every little bit will help, but will removing just the little bit of heat that the hard drive contributes be enough?

Not all externals are quite as fast as internals tend to be either, since externals tend to be more for storage in general. (Plus they're usually a bit more expensive as well).

Sadly I doubt that it will alleviate all or even much of your problem, since the items that tend to build up the most heat would much rather be your CPU and your graphics card. Either or both of those could be sending the "overheat" signal out.

(Although, as I said, that somehow raising the bottom of the laptop to have some ventilation underneath, might also help) ; but I'd rather not give myself out as an expert - I'm hoping someone in glitches could possibly give you some more definite solutions.

EDIT: Heh, you'd probably faint if you saw how big the box for my gaming system is Rowan! razz It's huge, and the main reason for it being huge is to prevent overheating; so my system has a lot of ventilation space and fans going for it.
Now just imagine how cleverly they must try and design a gaming laptop to be able to dissapate as much heat as a desktop, and bearing in mind that even some desktops tend to overheat if you don't take care of that aspect...

In any case, good luck, I really hope you manage to find a workable solution for your problem. smile

Rowan, how long have you owned this laptop? If it's a number of years, it might be suffering from dust on the cooling elements - I've lost desktop PC hardware to gummed up fans and radiators before now.

Thanks to all who have given me suggestions for my hotblooded laptop. Things have improved a little since I repositioned my laptop over the cooler. Before I had it right in the middle but now I moved it so the fan was directly over the hottest part which is closer to the back near the screen. So now I can play 20 minute stretches. Still not ideal but better.

Gremlin, my laptop is three years old. I use a can of compressed air occassionally to blast dust out of the cracks. I just don't understand why it's overheating with this particular game but not with other new ones.

I'm still doing side quests for the Broken Valley Village. It is fun.

I'm in the Forgotten Outpost. There is a room with a chest but I see no way to open the door. According to the gamepressure walkthrough there is supposed to be a button on a wall to push and a key on a table. I don't see the key although I may have picked it up on an earlier visit. Unfortunately the inventory keys are not labelled. But I don't see a wall button anywhere. Does anyone remember where this button is?

No, looney, still no button on any wall. I understand it's sometimes hard to remember details like that. I hoped someone had better memory than me about stuff like that. Thanks for asking.

Rowan, The key is on a table and a pressure plate is at the far end of the room and it says so when you get close to this blank wall. That wall is brick with nothing in front of it. No barrels. You have to walk all around the room until, at the end, you see this wall. Impossible to see this pressure plate but if you are at the right spot, the game tells you about this plate. I just went there to check!!! Hope my description is clear???

Thank you, Jacline and looney! thanks I finally found the pressure plate. It was very difficult to find the trigger point. As a matter of fact it showed up only after I turned sideways to the wall. The message to open the pressure plate just flickered on and off so it must have been a very small target. Anyway, after all that, I didn't think the prize was worth all that much. Those are just the surprises of a game. smile

I've been getting some quest items for which I don't have a quest yet. Hope this doesn't mess up any quests.

There's a patch 1.03 available of this game. Not sure what it fixes but if you click on your game updater it will find and download the patch automatically. I can't download it yet myself as I am having intermittent connection problems.

Does anyone know any tricks to winning in the temple of doom (near the bandit camp)? I just can't get around the poison damage from the floor.

Rowan, the

bodies on the floor form a trail of "safe" areas. You have to move from corpse to corpse in the order that they lie from you to the dias in the middle - you then have to jump over the middle bit of water (after a battle with the guy shooting at you from across the room).Once you have crossed over to the other side follow the trail on to the door at the back. While standing over a corpse, the poison won't affect you.

Good luck!

Thank you, Moondancer. I hadn't found the "safe" areas. I would run as fast as I could and I didn't even have enough time to look around before the poison got me. Thank you again. I'll let you know how I make out.

Rowan, I had really also struggled with this area for a long time, and had kept dying before I found the answer re the
Click to reveal..
corpse "stepping stones" somewhere on the internet. How you do it, is you start at the door, and take one step onto the first corpse to your left. You then have to follow the trail of corpses almost like stepping stones, working towards the left at first. I'm sure you'll soon find the knack of it. smile

Keep in mind that you will still have to fight off those skeletons, and then the guy who taunted you at the door, a bit later on, so I do hope you have some good form of ranged assault at your disposal.

Moondancer, I did it!! Thank you again.

I was disappointed that

the place collapsed after I came out. I had become encumbered in there and was going to come back to loot to my heart's content but can't do that now. I don't feel like doing this quest over again

I haven't got my battle tower yet. Will I be able to store stuff there?

The exact same thing happened to me, Rowan. Encumbrance becomes more and more a problem as the game progressess, it's such a pain.

What helps is to make sure you get rid of all books (you can sell them) once you've read them, as long as they're not quest items.

I also keep going to the alchemy tree in the mill basement in order to use up my ingredients for potions.

Apparently you do get a storage room in the tower, but I'm not there yet, as I've been too busy to do any gaming in the past week or two. frown

I hope there's a kennel master in the battle tower. My creature desperately needs housebreaking. puppy No wonder the stuff I resell is so cheap. Everything has been marked by him. I also hope there is soeone who is brave enough to give him a bath and flea treatment. He scratches all the time. I just hope none of the critters get under my armor. zombie

Hehehe, yes, that creature really has an overactive bladder, doesn't he?

I've been running around all around the tower, trying to decide which alchemist and necromancer etc. to choose.

Well, the alchemist choice is relatively easy, but I hate both of those necromancers...

I've made it to Orobas Fjords and have finished everything there is to do in the Depleted Ore Mine except for one thing. At the end of one of the tunnels is a series of platforms. When you jump from one to the other (while dodging fireballs) the next platform always rises to the next height. Near the top is a lever. When I pull it another platform materializes but vanishes after a few seconds. What do I do here? How do I jump on this vanishing platform? Or am I supposed to do something completely different?

I give up on this game. There are a couple of fights that I just can't win (Aleroth and the one with the Svivaldi[sp] dragon). I'm playing on easy and still can't defeat the baddies. Has anyone else had trouble with the difficulty level? I'm usually quite good in other games but this one has killed the enjoyment.

Yes Rowan I gave up on this game back in December here's what I wrote in a post back then.
Quote:
Well I have officially given up on this game and it's a shame because I so looked forward to it for so long. Maybe for some people it's playable but it's not for me and it's no longer any fun and if it ain't fun why play it?

I've gotten to the part where you get your battle tower and can (and must in some cases) turn into a dragon. You have to become a dragon to travel to locations in this area and.......
(1) I can't figure out how to get to the locations I need to
(2) Every time I become a dragon I have to fight aerial fights (which are similar to airplane dogfights)
(3) I end up dying every time I get into one of those dragon fights.

Therefore my long awaited sequel to Divine Divinity will hit my trade list.

Oh well..........Stuff happens

You laugh because I'm different
I laugh because you're all the same

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Hi!
Just started playing this game and so far really like it. I have one question (so far). I have 2 skill points to use but how do I apply it to the skill I want (lockpick)? I have leveled up once but can't put the skill point in lockpick.
Please help.
Thanks.
Carol
