This might be a stupid question but here goes.
I have a analog screen and I am trying to buy a digital screen for my pc. How can you tell if your pc will support the digital screen? I have a 4 year old computer with xp and hate to get another computer with windows 7 because of the older games.

It is not the computer you need to be concerned about but rather the video card. To be more exact, new flat screen monitors that don't use CRTs use both standard and DVI inputs and should connect to any computer.
However, old video cards may not support the screen size or aspect ratio (width/height) of new monitors.

So, what size monitor were you thinking of getting and what price restrictions do you have? And what is the make and model video card in your computer?

Most Digital Flat Panel Screens support both Analog and digital inputs. Post the model number of the monitor you're looking at and we can look it up for you.

Edit -

Now how did I miss that?

LG W2243T looks like ***this one*** or ***this*** -- 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Specs for the Gateway GM5076e are ***here***.

A Geforce 6200 with 64MB Turbocache should be able to display 1920 x 1080 resolution for normal desktop use.

I thought it might work but a computer store told me that I don't have the right equipment for going to a digital screen from a analog screen. I thought I double check here.

Thank you all for the advice

Well, they're actually correct (if you're 6200 doesn't have a DVI port, and I can't tell from the specs) - your connection will still be Analog.

Not to worry though - the monitor accepts a 15 Pin D-Sub (Analog VGA) connector.

You might need a cable if the monitor doesn't come with one.

Also your video card needs to have a DVI connection to attach it to. If your card has connections like ***this one*** you're fine. If it only has connections like ***this***, you're missing the DVI connection.

It looks like I don't have a DVI connection. Can I get a DVI connection? Swap the cards??

You can get an adapter - but, you really don't need one.

Link Depot DVI-AVGA-ADPT DVI To VGA Adapter - Retail

But when I put the screen in, will it come up with analog or digital on the screen?

I think I have both - 9 pin & 15 holes on one card and the other is 9 hole

It will come up as Analog - but the monitor accepts Analog, so it wont be an issue.

If you ever decide to upgrade your video card to something with a bit power - you shouldn't have an issue. You have 1 PCI-E x16 slot available and a 400 watt power supply.

Edit -

And if you haven't upgraded your memory (from the factory default - 512 MB) - you should (a minimum of 2 GB is sufficient).
