Near the beginning of the game, after April visits Arcadia, she has to go to the police station for the first time. My game keeps crashing when she enters the building. This is right after she listens to the cut scene of the newscaster reporting on the crashed transport vehicle.

I'm on a XP home system. Compatibility doesn't help. I faintly remember this happening when I played it years ago.

Suggestions, patch, saved game, any help appreciated.

Hi InlandAZ, the download links at your site aren't working or helping. The first says 'error'. The second takes me to FileFront and a search there gives no information on TLJ. The third link will not load. I'm using Opera browser.

I found and downloaded a 1.60 version of the patch but it says it can't install because it doesn't find a 2003 version of the file in my folder. I have the 2000 version of the game.

I checked out FunCom but they don't have support at their site. I'm not sure where to next.

burpee, there's a way around this. You can get into the police station via one of the trashcarts which move around the streets in that area. Programme a trashcart, climb inside and you'll enter the station via another route, bypassing the need to enter via the main door. luck

Lol, that sounds like fun Rushes!!! I think I will give that a try.

I just now found a fix for my problem. I found an old thread from way back in the days of old about FMV crashing and at the end someone mentioned locking up at the police station.

Another person said there's a folder named 'station' in our TLJ folder and, sure enough, I had the station fix inside of it. I only needed to install disc 2 and run the fix.

I'm going to go in via the trashcart though...what hoot.

Thank you both for helping me to resolve my problem. Most appreciated.

Funcom used to have a lot of patches at longestjourney.com
But now that they've released the digital download it looks like they don't want to bother supporting the disc versions any more. They've taken down all the old patches and game help and the old links don't work. They want you to buy the game all over again.

Since you have the old version of the game, it looks like the patch you want is called TLJ_PoliceStationFix.exe

Google still has a cache of their FAQ on the Police Station fix ***here***.

Here's the text of that, in case it disappears.

Quote:
Help - FAQ - Known Bugs
The game keeps crashing outside the police station when I walk from one location to the next. How do I fix this?

Unfortunately, your particular video-card probably has trouble with a 3D animation in this scene. Try disabling 3D acceleration (uncheck the "Enable 3D acceleration" checkbox) when starting the game. If that doesn't work you can try to patch the game, the patch has also been included on the North American release CDs: It's located on Disc One, under the "Station_fix" directory. Do NOT run this patch unless your game crashes on this location! This patch doesn't fix anything else!

There's also a way to avoid the problem altogether - the following information does contain a spoiler, so beware:

To get into the police station, move the barrier from the road and get into the garbage container. You'll now skip the troublesome location altogether.

So if you have the 4 CD US version of the game, look for that folder they mention.

Hi Jenny100 and Rushes, I'm now sticking of fish heads and the mitten in the corner of the trash bin kept moving smile I'm in the police station. You are both correct that you don't need to go up the stairs at all because the cop won't let you in anyway.

I tried the bin first but couldn't figure out how to move the barracade so I went up the stairs and talked to the cop. I had to go back to the barracade and finally moved it after reading the street sign.

These little victories are what playing the games so fun. Thanks both again.

Drats - The normal download (from FunCom) was unavailable as well - and it the one I posted was working when I tested it.

It sounds like you've got it squared away though - enjoy the game (it's one of my all time favs).
