Most laptop screens aren't as bright -- especially when they aren't plugged in. They dim the screen to save battery life. But there are some with brighter screens. Different manufacturers will call their "high brightness" screens by different names.

A bigger issue might be the size of the screen, which is going to be smaller on a laptop than on desktop. Even the largest laptops are only 17" or 18".

Every laptop I've seen had had an Fn key combination to bring the screen brightness back up - it does however run the battery more.
