I just recently set up my wireless router network so I could use my new laptop anywhere in the house. I have been told I should leave my modem and router powered on all the time and they are plugged into a dedicated outlet so I can do that. (Before I got the router, I had my modem plugged into my power cord, which I turned off everytime I shut down my computer.)

The AC adapter for the modem is very warm (almost hot) and the router is a little warm. Is this normal and is there something I should do about it? I'm concerned about a potential fire hazard, or the equipment overheating.

I have a Netgear router with DSL internet connection.

I had Netgear at one time...It never got "HOT" just warm to the touch...If the unit is hot ..I would be concerned...

It should not be Hot to the touch..My cable box on top is just warm to the touch...Hot is not good.

Someone who know more than I do will have to answer this one for you, SuMac. I just checked my D-Link wireless router and the AC adapter which is plugged into a surge protector (I assume yours is!) is just barely warm and the router itself is cool to the touch.

It's spring. My life is weeds.

I just bought a new surge protector to plug my modem and router into, to see if it helps. They were in a regular extention cord. The router is just slightly warm to the touch, and the AC adapter for the modem and the modem itself are both still warm, though not dangerously hot. I'll keep my eye on them.

My own tends to run a bit in the hot side (of course everything in arizona tends to run that way).

Call your ISP (I assume they provided the modem) and ask them.
