I got this email, and since it was from Blizzard and I get a lot of game-related email, I assumed it was legit and clicked on it. Inside was this:

Quote:
Greetings,

An investigation of your World of Warcraft account has found strong evidence that the account in question is being sold or traded. As you may not be aware of, this conflicts with Blizzard's EULA under section 4 Paragraph B which can be found here:
WoW -> Legal -> End User License Agreement
and Section 8 of the Terms of Use found here:
WoW -> Legal -> Terms of Use

The investigation will be continued by Blizzard administration to determine the action to be taken against your account. If your account is found violating the EULA and Terms of Use, your account can, and will be suspended/closed/or terminated.
In order to keep this from occurring, you should immediately verify that you are the original owner of the account.

To verify your identity please visit the following webpage:

Only Account Administration will be able to assist with account retrieval issues. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter, and your continued interest in World of Warcraft.

Sincerely,

Account Administration
Blizzard Entertainment

I've never played WoW or had an account. Does this look like a scam? (I did NOT click on the link within the email.)

It does appear shadey. This morning Clark Howard, the radio host, warned about email scams and beware! He claimed they have mushroomed. Maybe there's more info on his website - probably - clarkhoward.com.

It is a scam.

I have been getting those WoW emails for a few months, at first very sporadically but lately I'm getting 3 or 4 a day.

First to tell me that my account is being investigated, then suspended and finally blocked.
The cycle then starts over again.

They also sent a few using my own email address.

I NEVER follow links in email - too risky.

I go to my account on say WOW and check there.
usually it'll say if something is wrong or you can't access the game.

I didn't click on the link WITHIN the email. But I did click to read the email. I've read that some viruses can infect computers just if you open the email. If scammers write to me using the name of companies like Blizzard, how do I tell the difference between the real thing and the scam without opening the email?

Hi Becky smile

I download and read my email using Outlook Express but if I am suspicious of an email, I don't open it in Outlook Express, I immediately delete it. And then go to my ISP site and open it there.

If it's a "scam one" that I can forward to the site it's purporting to come from, then I also forward it to them from there.

Helps sites keep in the know of what's going on yes

Cheers.

I usually get all my emails through Gmail (import function of other email addresses), which have an excellent filter for scams.
And if they aren't sure of one, they tell me and advice not to open it smile

Becky

Most of the accounts I use, when they email me they use my first name and sometimes both first and second name. I was told that if they do not it is a scam. I know I have recieved such scams from people wanting all my information saying they are from Paypal or Ebay and other places. I send them to their department to investigate them.
