I am playing Uru (for the 2nd time) on my new computer and I am having trouble with the graphics, they are not showing completely, I keep getting beige boxes around things, it isn't affecting my playing but it is annoying, any suggestions as to how to adjust something to avoid this. (notice how technical I am!!)

Have you checked the game's options menu to see if there are any visual effects you can turn off (or turn down)?

You might try lowering the video acceleration.

Monbron I had that problem with the background the very first time I played the game. Someone on GameBoomers gave me the solution below and it worked.
This is how you can fix it.

1. Go into the Myst IV Bin Folder (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV Revelation\bin), and find the File: ares_config.xml
2. Open and edit this file with notepad.
3. Find the line: <directxper_pixel_projected_textures="true"/>
4. Change it to:
<directxper_pixel_projected_textures="false"/>
If the line doesn't exist add it.
5. Save the file and try running the game again.

My game had sandy colored squares and I could only see Yesha clearly. I hope this clears up the background for you. The patch for the game did not fix this problem but making the change to the bin folder did.

Thank you Kaki's sister, I notice you refer to Myst 4, but I went into Uru as you directed and finally found the 'bin' I have been through every file I can find both in the bin and out, but I can't find the file you refer to so I can't change it. Any other ideas, I went on the Ubisoft site but can't find a patch for URU it says there aren't any, which I can't believe, but I don't know what to do next. insane

Monbron,
On the screen,in the lower right corner there is (I think),a wrench symbol.Clck on this and turn off(or on) Shadows.Maybe it will help.
If your computer is having trouble playing this game it may be time for some upgrades or looking into a new computer.

What is the model of your current video card?

Uru plays fine with my old ATI Radeon X800SE, which is an old card now.

All ATI's newer cards have the HD.
Your card should work with the game.
It's probably a matter of finding the right drivers. I think the drivers I used would be too old for your card. You might try installing a different driver version than the one you're using (either newer or older) and see if you have any better luck.

Also, if you're using the disc version of the game, have you tried the download version from MystOnline?

This sounds like a driver incompatibility to me. The problem is that over the years, dozens of new video adapters have been developed, so finding a driver that is compatible can be a challenge.

The FREE online version is likely to have better compatibility with newer adapters, since they beta tested it more recently. It plays the same as the offline game (but with a few new areas to explore).

If changing drivers doesn't help, it might be worth playing the online game. You can play alone for the most part if you want. :-)

Monbron if you do not have that "file line" then try adding it (see #4 in my post above). I was told when I had the same problem if I didn't have the line to add it in. If it doesn't work you can always delete it.
I had those same beige boxes as you. It's worth a try to add the line to the bin file.

Thanks everybody, Kaki's sister, I'm not completely sure how to do this, do I go into bin and then open and edit in notepad or do I need a file to open?? Thanks Dadguy, I would like to continue with the disc if I can.

Are you talking about Uru or about Myst IV?
Your instructions are for Myst IV.
Does Uru have an ares_config.xml file?
Creating the file when the game doesn't have one or use one won't do any good.

Jenny No Uru doesn't have that file that why I was confused as to how I did it. Any other ideas, I am assuming the problem is that my graphics card is so new that Uru doesn't really support it, I have applied the patch that is suposed to help with graphics in Teledahn but it didn't. confused

Are you using the disc version of the game?
or the one from http://mystonline.com/en/ ?

The version from http://mystonline.com/en/ is free and may have been updated to work better with newer video cards.

You can also try using different drivers, but you'll have to experiment to see which works the best.

Jenny the fix was for Myst Rev4, but when I was given instructions on how to "add" the "file line" it said to add the "line" if it wasn't in the folder so I thought maybe it was worth a try to add it to the bin folder in URU and see if it made a difference.

The problem monbron is having is exactly the same as the one I had in Rev4 so I thought it might be worth a try to add it to the bin folder.

The computer I originally played on had hyperthreading and it caused Rev4 to freeze and crash in several places. Dadguy got me past all my trouble spots by getting past them for me when I sent him a saved game.
