Monbron I had that problem with the background the very first time I played the game. Someone on GameBoomers gave me the solution below and it worked. This is how you can fix it.
1. Go into the Myst IV Bin Folder (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV Revelation\bin), and find the File: ares_config.xml 2. Open and edit this file with notepad. 3. Find the line: <directxper_pixel_projected_textures="true"/> 4. Change it to: <directxper_pixel_projected_textures="false"/> If the line doesn't exist add it. 5. Save the file and try running the game again.
My game had sandy colored squares and I could only see Yesha clearly. I hope this clears up the background for you. The patch for the game did not fix this problem but making the change to the bin folder did.

All ATI's newer cards have the HD. Your card should work with the game. It's probably a matter of finding the right drivers. I think the drivers I used would be too old for your card. You might try installing a different driver version than the one you're using (either newer or older) and see if you have any better luck. Also, if you're using the disc version of the game, have you tried the download version from MystOnline? http://mystonline.com/en/

Monbron if you do not have that "file line" then try adding it (see #4 in my post above). I was told when I had the same problem if I didn't have the line to add it in. If it doesn't work you can always delete it. I had those same beige boxes as you. It's worth a try to add the line to the bin file.

1. Go into the Myst IV Bin Folder (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV Revelation\bin), and find the File: ares_config.xml Are you talking about Uru or about Myst IV? Your instructions are for Myst IV. Does Uru have an ares_config.xml file? Creating the file when the game doesn't have one or use one won't do any good.

Are you using the disc version of the game? or the one from http://mystonline.com/en/ ? The version from http://mystonline.com/en/ is free and may have been updated to work better with newer video cards. You can also try using different drivers, but you'll have to experiment to see which works the best.

Jenny the fix was for Myst Rev4, but when I was given instructions on how to "add" the "file line" it said to add the "line" if it wasn't in the folder so I thought maybe it was worth a try to add it to the bin folder in URU and see if it made a difference.
The problem monbron is having is exactly the same as the one I had in Rev4 so I thought it might be worth a try to add it to the bin folder.
The computer I originally played on had hyperthreading and it caused Rev4 to freeze and crash in several places. Dadguy got me past all my trouble spots by getting past them for me when I sent him a saved game.
