Hey all. I decided to finally play this game, after having it for years and was really enjoying it. I'm playing it on a computer with XP Service Pack3, Nvidia GEForce 9600 GT. No problems until I got to Jack Place's house.

At Jack's place, when I go to the refrigerator and open it it shows a test tube. I press the spacebar to pick it up. I am supposed to press spacebar again to put it in inventory. When I press the spacebar again the screen freezes and nothing I do gets me out of it.

I checked Ubi Soft's website for patches and there is nothing there at all for Largo Winch. Help!

Jean

Edited: Arrrggh. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, first changing compatability mode on cd to Win 98, and now it gives me error message: "Script not loaded! Could not open file C:\Windows\LargoWinchInst/InstData\ubiins.des. I can't even uninstall the darn thing now.

Well, I give up unless someone has a suggestion. I cleared caches, did defrag, updated Video and now when I put the cd in drive the computer doesn't find it. It's not my drive, I tried another game and it works.

Only thing I can think of now is it might be a bad cd. Any ideas?

If you're not able to browse files on the CD, it might be a bad or marginal CD.

With marginal CD's, they sometimes read and sometimes don't, or they only read on some CD drives.

To uninstall the game, delete the game folder and then use a registry cleaner to get rid of any registry changes made by the installer.

Hi Jenny:

Thanks. I can browse the files on the cd but that's about it. I have not used a registry cleaner in years, and have forgotten how to do it, lol. Can you give me some tips on it?

Jean

Try running CCleaner - it's one of the better registry cleaners, and fairly simple to use.

You can find it below:

Thanks Inland! I've bookmarked it and maybe if I get brave I'll try it. I'm so scared I'll screw something up. I might just leave the old Largo files on the computer. I remember horror stories in the past of deleting old games instead of uninstalling and messing things up -- shared dlls and that kind of stuff. Sigh.

Just call me chicken. lol

As long as you can read the CD, you can try copying the contents to a folder on your hard drive to make sure the files are all readable. It may be fine.

If you're using XP SP3, and installed into the default location of C:\Program Files, you may have an incomplete or aborted install. The game was made in 2002 for Windows 98, ME, and XP without any service packs. So there may have been parts of the game (and the game's install process) that conflict with SP3's security restrictions.

If you use Ccleaner, it allows you to back up your current registry so you can undo any changes it makes.

I have always used Revo uninstaller. It uninstalls everything in the reg. pertaining to the game. So easy to use and it's free.
