Hello,

I am wondering if it is possible to add two more hard drives to my pc, (currently have one 500TB with Windows 7), and install Windows XP on one and Vista on the other, using the drive letters to boot either of them up. This would make it possible to play a plethora of games that I cannot play on 7. Thank you for any and all input. wave

I think you mean a 500GB drive (I've seen 500TB drives, but they're network drives).

It's been awhile since I've run a dual-boot system, but if I recall correctly you can actually run XP/Vista or XP/Windows 7 on the same hard drive (so long as they reside on different partitions and XP is installed as the first OS).

If you'd rather run them on separate drives you should be able to do that as well.

As an alternative, if your PC is fast enough, you can install VMware Player (or Virtual Box) with XP or above, which allows 3D support.

Edit -

If you have Vista or 7 installed first - here's a How To that describes the steps (it's a little more difficult).

Thank you so much Inland, my bad, I meant GB! blush I am planning on installing more memory and hope this will do the trick. I am definitely going to look into the VMware Player also. This is great news as now I should have access to a much better video card that is on this pc as opposed to my old pc that still has XP. Once I have the money stashed I will be back with specs from my pc to see what you recommend. Thank you so much. wave

Hellooo, I'm back sooner than I expected because Newegg is having a huge sale on storage devices. Can anyone tell me which ones would be compatible with my pc? I want a hard drive and more RAM. Thank you in advance for any help.

I am providing a link to Newegg here:

Unfortunately, DXDiag doesn't report the specific components required to know - What is your motherboard model, and what is the wattage on your power supply?

You can use CPU-Z to identify the mobo -

That's on your computer, so we can't see it. See how it links to a file on your C: drive?

But your other link is OK, and it looks like you have an Asus M3N72-D.

There is information about that motherboard ***here***.

It has 6 SATA connectors and only 1 IDE connector, so you'll want to get SATA hard drives for it. The SATA connectors are 3Gb/s.

Looking at the Newegg Sale page...
I don't know what size drive you're looking for, but the 750 GB Western Digital seems to have decent feedback. The 320 GB Western Digital, the 1.5TB Seagate, and the 500 GB Hitachi would also work, but the Hitachi and Seagate don't have as good user feedback as the two Western Digitals. The 320 GB WD drive is smaller, but may be large enough for you and is cheaper.

You can add an additional 4 GB of RAM, but unless you really need it I wouldn't bother (you already have 4 GB, which should be more than sufficient).

It looks like your Mobo accepts 240 Pin DDR2 (PC 6400) - like these:

Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

If you visit the Crucial web site - there is a downloadable plug-in that will recommend the best ram for your configuration.

Crucial Memory Advisor

As to additional drive space, any of the SATA drives will do so long as the case has an additional drive bay to house it. Nearly all will accomidate 2 drives.

If your PC is feeling sluggish while gaming - your best bet is a new video card.

I was afraid I wasn't doing this properly. glad you could make some sense of it. I was leaning toward the Seagate because of all the space, however, I will trust in your knowledge and look at the other ones instead. Actually there should be more than enough room to partition and add XP and Vista, right? I probably wouldn't have more than a couple of games loaded on each one at a given time anyway. Think I'm going to do it!! My other question was concerning adding more RAM. How much more can my pc take and which kind, please? The sale also includes memory. I have heard Kingston and Corsair are good brands.?? If you have the time? Thanks a million for your help.

EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't see your other reply and Jenny's also.

Not a problem Lotus - the Crucial web site will identify your current modules and potential upgrades.

For brands, I've always been partial OCZ - it's expensive, but good. Crucial is also good - Kingston is basically bulk memory (nothing special, but it gets the job done). I have Kingston in one of my laptops, no issues what so ever.

Yes, you can repartition your drive and install a new OS on it.

Hi again and thank you so much for all of your help. I did order the Western Digital hard drive. I think I will hold off on the memory if it is not needed. I am curious what video card you would suggest. I know the one I have now isn't the best and I don't want one that will start to smoke if I get seriously hard into a game, lol . My computer isn't really lagging in the games but I am always up for a better experience. yes

You'll get several opinions on this subject - here's mine smile

You can get a modest increase in performance with something like a Geforce 9800GT, but in as much as your motherboard supports PCI 2.0 x16 - why not go with something in the GTX series (like a GTX 260).

Draclvr has a GTX card I believe, she'd know better as to how hot they run.

If all you play are Adventures games then your current should be adequate. The 9800GT runs about $98.00, the GTX is about twice that amount.

Edit -

I should have mentioned that the GTX 260 has some pretty high power requirements (500 watt minimum). Just something else to consider when thinking about an upgrade.

See your PM, Lotus! I put a 650 watt Antec power supply in this computer and it handles the GTX 260, three 500 GB hard drives and a 160 GB hard drive like nothing is going on. But as I said in my PM, do check the dimensions. Even in this roomy Antec 900 case, I had to remove an unused fan cage to fit it in - it's a very large card.

I am back with yet another question. Not being as brave or as smart as Draclvr, I will be having my professional computer guy do the work for me. He will not install my old XP as it is already on another pc. Not too surprising, I guess. It has to be a legal copy with the sticker from either Newegg or TigerDirect. I think he mentioned one other place I wasn't familiar with. I think, I hope, I found the right one for us gamers but do need to be sure. Here is the link:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...amp;x=0&y=0

Thanks so much for your help!

EDIT: Will something like this make a difference as to my Win 7 64 bit? I am so confused...

Are you looking at the OEM XP Home CD that Newegg is selling? What do you mean when you ask if it will "make a difference as to my Win 7 64 bit?" Are you wanting to do a dual boot?

Brave? Smart? Hardly, my dear! Just inquisitive and eager to learn, even at my age!

You can get legal copies of XP from any number of places. I got two of them last fall from Amazon for $85 each.

Which drive will have your Win 7 and which drive will have your XP on it? What I think you will end up with is what I have - a dual boot. When you boot up your computer, you will select which drive you want to boot into. I've had no problems with drivers for all the new components in my computer with XP and Win 7 has just been great for driver support.

Okay, my Win7 is on a 500 GB drive and my techie guy will partition the new drive, 750 GB's, and put XP on one side and Vista which I do have a legal copy of that was on this very same pc, on the other side. Will that be a dual boot? I am not sure if there are special 64 bit XP's? I am not sure what 32 and 64 bit are even!!! I would like to understand this! I just want the XP Home that I think I have seen recommended for games. I don't know what OEM is either but I did see this in the write up on Newegg. I think maybe Amazon was the other place my tech mentioned. He has a very strong Japanese accent and sometimes is hard to understand. Their price is better than Newegg. I am sorry to be such a bother. Every time I think I have researched something and have a basic understanding new things crop up and I feel like a total dummy!! blush

If by "side" you mean partition, then yes.

Quote:

Yes there are, but I don't think you want them.
I assume you want XP for backward compatibility, and old Windows games from the 1990's that contain 16-bit code won't work with 64-bit operating systems.

OEM in this case means it is meant to be installed on only one computer. It's not meant to be transferrable to another computer (if you buy a new computer). The boxed retail version is more expensive than the OEM because it allows two transfers to different computers (though it's only supposed to be installed on one at a time).

Quote:

Be careful if you buy from an Amazon seller. A used OEM version is useless. Check some of the feedback from unhappy people who purchased from Amazon sellers.

With Newegg, you know the XP Home you're getting will be new.
