Checking a neighbors pc for his missing desktop icons. Tried just short-cutting the icons then did a system restore but nothing. We had a very brief power outage a couple weeks ago and that's when he said they disappeared.
He's able to access programs from the start menu but that's all.

OS is Win XP. He doesn't have internet; just like to play a few games.

Right click the desktop and select View - Is Show Icons checked?

If the box is checked, try downloading TweakUI from Microsoft. IIRC it had a repair/rebuild Icons function.

Thanks will head over and try the view, but he doesn't have internet. He's elderly and just likes the card/poker type games but didn't like having to go to start and try to find them each time.

Is it legal or can I d/l tweakui to a cd?

It is perfectly fine to download and install it from another disc.
