Thanks to InlandAZ I found a video card driver for my old WIN98, but the old computer is not compatible with my fast access internet installation disk, so I can't download to it.
So is it possible to write the driver download to a CD or CD-RW? Hope this makes sense thanks

It sure is - I back my legacy drivers up to optical and store them for safe keeping. You can also use a USB stick, they work as well.

Thanks again, Inland-
I copied the file to CD, but the WIN98 computer "Update driver wizard"does not recognize it.
I think the problem might be with Windows-after a series of error mssgs it says
"please insert SR9 Windows driver disk" I tried "run" drive D-that didn't work.
Is there any other way to install this?
or perhaps it's a WIN98 problem, in which case I'm out of luck?

It seems to be looking for a particular driver CD.
From what I can tell, SR9 stands for "Savage Reality" 9.

Was the file you copied to the Windows 98 computer a zip file? If so, you'll have to unzip it before you can use it. Or if it's a self-extracting .exe file you may have to run it, and then run one of the files inside it, or access the unzipped file folder from Device Manager.

Where did you find this driver? Is your Windows 98 a brand name computer? Did the video card come with the computer? You might have to get the driver from the computer's brand name website.

The file I copied was unzipped.
The device that's in the computer is "SR9-8MB SDRAM Number Nine Visual Technology.
I found the driver for this exact version at"driverguide.com."

I did a search for SR9-8MB SDRAM at driverguide and found something called ag1t00a.zip. Is that what you downloaded? If it is, that's a BIOS update for your video RAM, not a driver.

Check Device Manager to see what is listed under "Display" in the list

I pointed her to this one the other day -

number9SR9win98AGP.zip2.1 MB

I downloaded the file and took a look at, it's definitely a video driver.

Edit -

Under Windows 98, when you get to the point that the Wizard wants to search for your hardware, reply No and click Next. Select Display (click Next) and press Have Disk. From there point it to the file you copied to your PC (my unzip contained a sub-directory named WIN98). If it's the right driver it will find the .INF and install.

Jenny- "ag1t00a" is the file I downloaded. It is 288.1KB. The file Inland mentions is 2.1MB, so I downloaded the wrong thing. I couldn't use the link because of having to sign up, give password, ect.ect. so when I did the search thats what came up. I will try again. Thanks for your input.

Inland, I will try to get the 2.1MB download and see what happens-thanks for your help.

I have now got the correct download copied, but I turned on the old machine and all it did was come up with the blue scan disk screen, did that and than would not boot up,after the WIN98 screen it went blank. ctrl/alt/del brought up a blue screen "CMOS Setup Utility" another ctrl/alt/del brings up another blue screen with 7 or 8 lines of tech terms, pressing "F1" for each of them brings a list of words, much of which has "disabled" after it. The question now is, does this mean it is completely Kaput, or what?

Entering the setup utility sounds like your CMOS battery is dead - they're cheap... and easy to replace (most of the time). But... you should be able to enter the settings and re-boot.

You'll lose them when you turn the PC off, but at least you'll be able to test the drivers.

ooookay-thanks Inland-This is now getting in a little over my head-I had no idea such a battery existed! But not surprising it's dead, as this machine has been sitting idle for about 4 years.
Maybe its time to consider taking it to the "computer doctor"?

Here's how to replace a CMOS battery
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkBWZOtp2is

Very simple as long as you have the replacement battery.

You know your CMOS battery is kaput if your computer won't keep time (or remember other BIOS settings) when it's shut off.
