I have a few 95/98 games I did not get to play before XP came to be. Can I play them on XP without compatibility mode? If I download them without it will it hurt my XP installation or my computer?

It would depend on the game. Some work fine without compatibility mode, some require compatibility mode, some won't play without an emulator.

Which games are you looking at?

dogpenny, if you haven't visited Inferno's XP and legacy game website, you might find some help there too.

Ark of Time and the original version of Labyrinth of Time are DOS games and would probably require DOSBox or some other emulator. Ark of Time was very particular about VESA compatibility, and modern video cards won't work with it -- so you have to use a program that emulates the card it wants.

The original version of Labyrinth of Time won't have sound unless you have a computer (or emulator) set up for sound in DOS. However the updated version from ***Wyrmkeep*** should work in XP without fussing over the sound.

Jewels of the Oracle may or may not work depending on whether you have the older version or not. The original version had cut scenes showing your movement as you moved between puzzles. Unfortunately these cut scenes crashed on XP computers. Dreamcatcher "solved" the problem by removing the cut scenes. However even the original version should work if played on a Windows 95/98 virtual machine inside Virtual PC.

Pandora's Box is reported to work under XP SP2 at ***ntcompatible.com***, however one person recommends to install using "administrator attribute," even with SP1, so this would certainly be necessary with SP2 or SP3. The game may also need to be installed and played using compatibility mode.

Road to India has also been played in XP, but may also need compatibility mode.

There may also be problems with these games associated with using a widescreen monitor. Some widescreen monitors work better than others at displaying 640x480 resolution.
