If you want to install or play the game, you have to turn your antivirus off. Otherwise the SecuROM copy "protection" will block the game from running (which it may do anyway).

Also you may have to install and play as Administrator. Even if you're already logged into an account with administrator privileges, you have to run the game as an administrator (right-click, choose to run as Admin...).

That doesn't sound right. I'm pretty sure there are supposed to be other characters in the game.

I can't help much since the game wouldn't run on my computer at all. But when you double-click the desktop shortcut to start the game, you should get a Window that shows Play, Setup, Website, and Close. Click Setup and then set shadows and antialiasing to 0. OK it and click Play and see if there's an improvement.

If that doesn't work, try running it windowed. There's a checkbox in the Setup.

If you are using the Comodo Firewall you can get the game to run by running it in the Comodo Sandbox. Also the Setup (for graphics options) doesnt seem to save your options so you may have to edit the config file directly.

I'm guessing that the default install folder is Program Files - Try installing it to your user folders the next time, and you should be able to avoid running the game in elevated mode (as administrator).

Why do they still make games that install in Program Files by default when it causes problems with so many computers? Wouldn't it be better just to install in C: ? Or to detect where the Documents (or My Documents) folder is?

It’s up to the developer - so, I can't answer that one. Windows 7 is still fairly new and it probably wasn't taken into consideration at the time the game was developed.

UAC (which is what causes the issue) can be disabled in both Vista and Windows 7, but it's not the recommended approach.

Actually the way most folks run XP doesn’t follow the recommended approach either. In XP it's suggested that you create a separate Limited User Account for running the PC. Doing so prevents things like Internet attacks because the account doesn't have the authority to install downloadable Trojans and such.

I have to believe it's why so many XP users find UAC overly intrusive.

Problems with installing in Program Files have been around since XP SP2, which is when Microsoft first started getting serious about security and started blocking changes in Program Files. At first it was mainly saves and configuration files, which is why many games started putting their save folder in My Documents. But with UAC, other aspects of running games seem to be affected too. It would be so much better if games were automatically installed somewhere that isn't "protected."

Games should be playable from a limited user account. The way it is, you often have to both play as an administrator and turn off your antivirus and anti-malware programs, which is especially bad with online games or those with DRM that requires you remain online in order to pass security checks.

Hi Guys
I am having the same problems with this game with windows 7 professional, I have even unistalled my antivirus, installed the game and ran game using Administrator option, but I still get the same response Alter Ego has stopped working etc. It is really annoying as I got the game from the USA which means if I cant get it to work its going to be a lot of trouble returning it as its been opened and I dont think the excuse of it wont run on my PC will be accepted. Can you guys help
Very Frustrated

If you're playing the game in 64-bit Windows 7, go to Computer > C:\ > Program Files (x86) > Viva Media > Alter Ego > Engine (hover mouse pointer over this file to make sure it's the Config file), double click it, open it in notepad, and change ShaderLevel = "0" and AntialiasingLevel = "0", go to File > Save.

This should bring the game's characters back into full view.

cruise, those posts are from 6 1/2 months ago...

Where did you find that fix? I've looked but am unable to locate it. The game is listed in the Windows 7 and Games thread as working perfectly on a Windows 7 computer with a dedicated 1 GB ATI 5870 video card. Before we start recommending these kinds of changes, we might want to know more about computer hardware. However, since this is such an old thread, I guess it's moot.

I used my MicroscopiX vision on the new laptop to read the binary code from the game on the computer's hard drive as well as the RAM transistors. smile

This fix is for when the computer switches to Intel HD graphics.

Uhhh.... oookkkk... Not very sound advide to be giving someone to be altering files then....

I suggest you start a new thread if you need help with your laptop and read the documentation that came with it on switching graphics.
