Why is AVG requesting permission for Internet access to msn.com?

Just a guess --
Maybe AVG gets some of its virus/malware or suspicious website definitions from msn?

Are you sure it's AVG that wants to connect and not some other program that AVG is blocking until it has permission?

I noticed the same thing and was wondering why.

I have a query also.
Gave AVG permission to Update,
now I have an AVG Toolbar and it's a Bully smashpc
How do I remove the Toolbar w/o removing AVG also?

Hi Jenny100,

You said,

In ZoneAlarm I had given AVG's update module permission to access the Internet whenever it needs to. So when ZA alerted me about another request from AVG to access the Internet, I checked the IP it wanted to connect to. When I found out it was somewhere on msn.com, I wondered why AVG would want to go there.

After I read your response in my email, I checked the properties for avgcmgr.exe (the module that made the request). It gives the Product name as "AVG Internet Security."

So now your "guess" makes absolute sense and I'm sure is the answer. bravo

Thank you so much for clarifying this for me.

I hope it never gives you an unwanted toolbar like it did to katbear.

Hi Jenny100,

I don't like automatic updates for anything, so I have AVG set to manual update. However, I did update it this afternoon. It updated both the program and the anti-virus definitions and I did not get a surprise toolbar like Kat.

One other thing: I'm using the free version. When I updated this afternoon, it offered me a more robust web monitoring upgrade. Since that sounded to me like it was probably not a part of the free version, I declined.

AVG's site at
http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free
lists what it is. The free version has a "LinkScanner" but the pay versions have other options.
