I was about 20 hours into the game with no probs.when it crashed the first time. Then after I turned the computer off and came back to the game it worked for a while longer, then crashed again.

I'm not sure if that means you're using a Mod or not, but according to info in ***some forums*** certain mods make the game unstable. Some people recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

There's a thread at the ***Gamespot forum***, advising you about files you need for certain Mods.

If you have an HP printer, there's something on the ***Elder Scrolls site*** that says a program related to HP printer can cause Oblivion to crash. This site has several other tips that might be of use.

You might try one of the "Oblivion" forums.

Thanks for your comments-I'm just playing the original game-no mods. Have looked at several forums, but none address this specific issue,except to say crashes do happen, which I don't mind as long as I can at least complete a couple hours of playing.I have thought of re-installing but...so much time wasted already!

You might visit a forum and ask the specific question. Also, at which point in the game is it going wonky? I am playing oblivion now. Have you done a Google search for all or part of the error message? The error may not be related to the game.

A couple of times it crashed when I pressed a location for fast travel and once when I pressed F5 for quick save and once when I was in process of exiting the game.
I have a couple of suggestions from the tech forum I posted on- update video driver, install patch, re-install game
I just finished playing for 2 hours with no crashes at all.
I'll try googling the error#.

You really should not play the game without installing the patches.

My game usually crashes on exit, but it does not affect gameplay.

You can always use movetoqt to travel if you have a problem.

I too am playing Oblivion on XP right now.

I didn't install any patches though and have been playing for nearly a month without experiencing any problems.

A lot depends on which version of the game you have and whether it's already been patched. If you have a newer edition, it may already be patched. If you have the original March 2006 edition of the game, you'll probably need the patch.

I'm playing a "Game of the Year Edition" but I have no idea when it was released.

The Game of the Year edition has been patched. There may be newer patches, but the Game of the Year has the most important ones.

I used goBobby's suggestion to google the 0xc0000005 error-Wow, lots of sites to choose from-evidently this is a common prob. One suggestion is to use a registry cleaner-I have one-but forgot to use it for quite a while-it found 296 errors! so....now I hope this improves things

Good news! I have just played for 2&1/2 hours with no crashes-looks like the registry errors caused the problem.
