Hi All,

Lately when ever I do a Google seach and click on the resulting links I get totally unrelated stuff come up. I can get the info from the lnks at the bottom of each reply though if I highlight the actual site URL and paste it into the URL bar. It's just a time consuming pain though. Any idea what's causing this, solution? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate with IE 8. I ran my spyware and virus checkers and my system was clean. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Barry

That sounds suspiciously like a browser hijacking infection -

Try running HijackThis.

I had this problem for many months. I tried every antivirus program I could find and they came up with nothing. Even some recommended especially for this problem. They seemed to work for many, but not for me. I would occasionly get redirected to sites listing different companies I could link to. One of those sites was Infomash. We recently found a reference to a single file, that when deleted, solved the problem. I'll check to see if I can find it again.

Thanks Pokey.
You're not talking about something like ***this*** are you?
It's about malware putting unwanted entries in the computer's hosts file.

No. I haven't found the original post, but this is similar:

"The file is called overlay.xul and it's in C:/program files/mozilla firefox/extensions under a subfolder with lots of characters as its name. Do a search in the extensions folder and find overlay.xul file."

I deleted the subfolder with lots of characters as suggested by the post I read earlier.

This may not be the solution, but worth a look. It is from this site:
