Black Dahlia is a Windows game, so it won't play in DOSBox. It will play in Virtual PC if you have Windows 95 or 98 installed in a VM.

There is also an installer patch that's supposed to allow it to play on XP.
Check ***this thread***.

Yes I know it says "DOS" on the Black Dahlia box. Apparently they had originally planned to make it either DOS or Windows 95, but changed their mind at the last minute. There's a post at ***Adventuregamers*** about it.

Hi everybody,
I downloaded the NO-CD (V.03) patch. I ran it, installed the 8 disks, followed all instructions, and ran the game (on my WIN XP PC). It runs PERFECTLY, including the "Fast Rotation Problem", and the videos are now crystal clear. To avoid random crashes, you MUST NOT set the "MUSIC BAR" option(in options menu) to the extreme left. You can play the music LOW, but NOT completely OFF. ALSO,I have set the "comptability" on the BD WIN.exe file to 'Windows NT", and have checked "Disable Visual Themes" and "Turn off advanced text---" box. I also accessed the BD.ini file within the game directory and changed the BRIGHTNESS figure
(under "options" to 175. To get rid of "subtitles", I changed the figure to 0(zero)
Since I have done ALL of these things, the game has played PERFECTLY without a single "hitch". I hope that I've been able to help others in order to play this marvelouus game in WIN XP. Enjoy it!
Sandy
