I have recently upgraded my card to GTX 260. I noticed my tech man installed DX 11. When checking on this at NVidia I find that my card does not support DX 11. Which one do I need and can I uninstall the 11 and reinstall the proper one? I really am a neophyte at these things. Thank you to anyone who can help. wave

Your card will work with DirectX 11.
It just won't be able to produce any of the DirectX 11-specific special effects.

So far, adventure games only use DirectX 9.0c, so you'll have to make sure you have that installed. But no need to uninstall DirectX 11. DirectX 9.0c and DirectX 11 are completely separate despite that they both have "DirectX" in their names.

What OS are you using, Lotus? My GTX 260 running on 64-bit Windows 7 also has DX11. As I understand it, the card itself doesn't do DX11, but is backwards compatible with DX10.

Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit (6.1, build 7600). Um, not sure what you mean by backwards compatible?? (I finally did it, Draclvr, btw!) Thanks Jenny, I guess I can Google DirectX to find the download? And do I need the 9.0c or the 10?? Sorry I am so muddled about all of this. blush And thank you too, Draclvr. Oh, and to further confuse me I guess my tech added a partition to my main drive and I have XP on this also. It really is a sweet machine!!!

I've been wondering if you'd finally taken the plunge!

Lotus, I've had DX 11 on this machine since I built it almost 2 years ago and I would just leave it alone if I were you! It will work just fine and like Jenny says, the GTX 260 just won't be able to produce some of the special effects available in DX 11. But then there aren't any adventure games in DX 11 anyway. None of my shooters have it either.

It does sound sweet - hope you are having fun with it!

I sent you a PM in late October when I got it back but I guess you never got notice of it. And yes, I am loving it. I have another question now. I loaded Riven up on the XP and ran it in Compatibility for Win 95 as it wouldn't work at all otherwise. However, now I have no sound. Any ideas on this? Also, do I need to put DirectX separately on the XP side? This is all so new to me, haha. Thanks for any wisdom forthcoming! wave
Pee Ess: You know you are my inspiration for all of this!!! lol

Knowing me, Lotus, I probably read the PM and promptly forgot about it!

Don't know about the other questions though...

Thanks for all of your input!! I wouldn't have this lovely computer if I hadn't gotten some very good advice!! If nobody else posts back perhaps I can start a new Riven thread here. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

You'd need 9.0c for adventure games.

Ok Jenny, I'll make sure it is showing up on my XP side, maybe that is why the sound isn't working on Riven.

There was one solution for the problem with the sound in Riven ***here***.

Quote:
no sound during intro and no voice during the game (but backgroud sounds works).

Solution :
Go to Riven folder and open the file "mohawk.w32" with notepad.
Find the line with "fEnableAudioProxy=true"
and change it to "fEnableAudioProxy=false".
Save the changes and then Riven should run correctly.
